E20 & Global Clean Energy Standards 🌍⛽
Ethanol blending is a globally established approach to advancing cleaner, more sustainable mobility. Countries such as Brazil, the United States, and several European nations have successfully utilized ethanol-blended fuels for decades, supporting emission reduction goals and enhancing energy diversification. Each country leverages its unique strengths and capabilities to undertake initiatives that best align with its priorities towards sustainability and self-reliance.
As an automotive testing, certification, and R&D organization, ARAI aligns its evaluation methodologies with internationally recognized engineering and testing standards. By leveraging global insights, material compatibility studies, fleet performance data, and emissions assessment protocols, we support the technical validation of alternative fuel under Indian operating conditions.
The combination of global experience and India-specific testing helps ensure that the transition to E20 is backed by robust scientific assessment, supporting a reliable, efficient, and sustainable mobility future.

Certain media reports have cited issues of fuel adulteration or contamination.
It is hereby clarified that fuel quality is monitored on a regular basis by Oil Marketing Companies. In addition to the advanced and elaborate testing protocols already in place, further checks have been instituted including water ingress testing 8-12 times a day in over 87,000 outlets. Over 2000 samples have also been tested for chloride/sulphide. Only 2 cases of chloride contamination have been found in the entire country till now and sales from those pumps were suspended immediately.
Strict action will be taken in case any contamination or adulteration is found in any retail outlet. OMCs have also instructed to take proactive steps to detect any possible contamination in the entire fuel supply chain.
Quality of E20 Fuel : Ethanol is considered to be one of the most suitable alternative blending for transportation fuel due to its better fuel quality (ethanol has a higher octane number) and environmental benefits
