FOUR MEN SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT PLUS MORE THAN 100 YEARS FOR HOEDSPRUIT CIT ROBBERY MURDER
HOEDSPRUIT β Four men have been sentenced to life imprisonment, with additional lengthy prison terms, for the murder of a G4S cash-in-transit (CIT) escort driver during a robbery in the Hoedspruit area.
The Polokwane High Court handed down the sentences on 20 October 2026 following an investigation by the Hawksβ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Phalaborwa.
Victor Mhlanga (31), David Matola (55), and Solomon Moyo (31) were each sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 116 years. Fannie Blessing Maselela (36) was sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 115 years.
The additional sentences will run concurrently with the life sentences imposed for murder. All four men were also declared unfit to possess firearms.
The incident occurred on 20 September 2023 in the Klaasier area, within the Hoedspruit policing precinct in the Mopani District.
According to the report approximately 12 armed suspects attacked the convoy, firing at the escort vehicle before disarming the guards of their official rifles and pistols.
Police said the two guards sustained gunshot injuries, resulting in the death of the driver.
The suspects then pursued the armoured vehicle while firing at it until it came to a stop. The driver and crew were allegedly ordered to get out, disarmed of two firearms, and chased into nearby bushes.
βThe suspects used explosives to blast the vehicle and made off with an undisclosed amount of money,β Maluleke said in a statement.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said police mobilised with the Hoedspruit Farmwatch after the incident. A shootout reportedly ensued when the team attempted to stop the suspects, who allegedly retaliated with a barrage of gunfire.
Four suspects were shot and killed during the incident, while another was injured and arrested at the scene. Further arrests followed, with assistance from members of the public.
The four convicted men are Mozambican nationals Victor Mhlanga and David Matola, Zimbabwean national Solomon Moyo, and South African national Fannie Blessing Maselela.
They faced multiple charges, including murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of explosives, and malicious property damage.
Limpopo Hawks Provincial Head Major General (Adv.) Gobz Govender commended the investigating team and all role-players for their commitment and contribution to securing justice.
Govender said that although no sentence could restore the life lost or erase the pain of the bereaved family, the outcome affirmed that the victim had not been forgotten and that those responsible had been held accountable.
The case was investigated by the Hawksβ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Phalaborwa, working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority.

Limpopo men joined thousands of fellow daredevils on Friday, 23 October 2026, as they took to the streets for the Hollard Daredevil Run, swapping traditional running gear for nothing but purple Speedos in support of an important cause.
Runners in Mokopane and Polokwane kicked off their Daredevil Runs earlier in the day, with Tzaneen joining the purple action later in the afternoon.
More than just a fun and memorable event, the annual Hollard Daredevil Run raises awareness about prostate and testicular cancer, highlighting the importance of regular health checks, early detection and encouraging men to take proactive steps towards protecting their health and well-being.
This year's event carried the bold tagline "Lekker Balls. Lekker Life," reinforcing the potentially life-saving importance of early detection and encouraging men to take charge of their health.
Last year's Hollard Daredevil Run raised R1.2 million, demonstrating the impact of the initiative in supporting the fight against prostate and testicular cancer.
