Yeah, sanctions are designed to target and put pressure on the regime, not the people, right? Wrong.
Bessent on Iran: The other thing that I would tell the Iranian people is, anything you need for the winter, you should go and get now. You should start stocking up on heating fuel. There's going to be a big heating fuel shortage. In terms of gasoline, everyone should fill up their tanks now.

I don’t think America fought a $100 billion war because the leader of Ethiopia asked our president to, I might have missed something…
Stop trying to convince me that El Sayed is not an antisemite. Yes, Israel gets a lot of money from the US, but Jordan, Ethiopia, and the Congo get the same amount when added together. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why he’s only talking about Israel.

I thought conflating Jews with Israel is antisemitic?

Good job @kwelkernbc for asking
wow -- a squirming Mike Rogers gets flustered as Kristen Welker points out that while he attacks El-Sayed over the Muslim Brotherhood, *Rogers himself* defended the Muslim Brotherhood during the same period of time that El-Sayed did!

I understand why @Lana_Nusseibeh is seeking to be UN secretary-general. Ambition. I don't understand why the US or other countries would support her given her role in underwriting mass murder and mass rape in Sudan, in a campaign Trump and Biden both defined as genocide.

This (the United States) is not your country. You are Canadian on a visa. Mandy Patinkin, however, IS an American, and his opinion actually matters. No one cares what you think or believe about our political system.
In our country, we will not discriminate based on people's central defining ideologies. This is why, as a Jew, I will always defend the rights of NAZIS to become senators. Jews can best be protected if NAZIS are elected. - Vile Ebola of a Trash Human Being, @PatinkinMandy

“Discrete.” Let’s announce it on Twitter
To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time. The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.

Yeah, and the ceasefire I arranged in Rye, NY between Russia and Ukraine is working great. No gunshots or drones so far.

What I think he probably means is that Jimmy Carter vacillated and didn't save the Shah when he could. Instead of sending General Huyser to advise the Iranian generals to not initiate a coup and instead support the weak PM Bakhtiar government, he should've, according to Shah supporters, told them to take over and shoot any protestors to stop the revolution. A common opinion among right wing Republicans at the time.

Yeah. And New York isn’t York, England. So?
Trump: It's called New Mexico, but it's not Mexico. I want to change it to "New America."

Not to praise him for his illegal war and lies about the Strait, but give him credit that he's the only American so far who, at least in this case, pronounces "Hormuz" correctly as, "Hormowz". Maybe it's a one-off.
🇺🇸🇮🇷 Trump ASKS whether to FINISH Iran off or just let it wither, and he said the U.S. is already getting everything it wants. Fresh strikes look more likely by the day 😬 Writer: Lucas

At the time of the Islamic Revolution, support for the Shah was in the single digits. Today, support for the Islamic system stands at anywhere between 10-20% of the population. Support for regime change may indeed be high, but that support is not universally in the former crown prince's favor. There are republicans, socialists, communists, MEK supporters (small in number), and separatist groups (as well as some reformists who would not necessarily wholesale change the system, but would institute major reforms that would effectively be a change in the regime). The former crown prince hasn't shown that he has the overwhelming support of the people (as Khomeini did by the time he was boarding a plane for Tehran), nor has he shown that he has a ground operation that can keep all the various groups that will vie for power or separate from the country together. (People chanting his name at the January demonstrations is not proof that the majority of the population would support his return to form a new regime and to run the country.) It is true that Iran is not Yugoslavia. And comparisons are not really apt here. But a collapse of the Islamic republic would also not be a smooth transition back to the monarchy or a secular, democratic republic that monarchists wish to portray. It is not fear-mongering to suggest that it won't be.

My kid emulates them.
Reading a lot of letters from the Founding Fathers for a project, I notice that in many ways they were far less concerned with strict grammar and uniform spelling than your average hack today.

Because according to most people, AIPAC represents the interests of a foreign country, despite not being registered under FARA. While it can claim that the US' interests align perfectly with Israel's, that claim doesn't really hold water. Americans, Jewish or otherwise, are of course free to fund whatever cause they want to. @SenSanders is not "condemning" the people funding AIPAC; he's condemning AIPAC itself. There is a difference. AIPAC is spending an enormous amount of money to try to prevent a person who doesn't support Israel unconditionally from becoming a US Senator. That is in Israel's interests, yes, but not necessarily in Michigan's or the US'.
Why are Jewish American donors are being condemned for funding causes and candidates they believe in and support? It's as if their antagonists want to disenfranchise American Jews and demote them to the status of mere subjects, rather than equal citizens with equal rights.

Read about the crimes of the UAE-backed RSF in western Sudan and why the UAE's candidate for UN Secretary-General, Lana Nusseibeh, should never be considered for the role. 👇👇
This is a shattering story of life in Sudan as the UAE-backed RSF militia slaughters and rapes people in the city of El Fasher. Hard for me to understand why anybody would think the UAE should be rewarded with the post of UN secretary general.

A woman SG would be great and good progress. The UAE's role in the genocide in Sudan, however; hardly covered by the western media and never mentioned by western governments, should probably disqualify a high rankling and current member of its government, be it a man or a woman. If there is a good argument as to whether the UAE's role is significant, or if there even is a genocide, it hasn't been heard.
No woman has ever been Secretary General of the UN. It is past time for one. Lana Nusseibeh, an excellent diplomat from the UAE, is now a candidate to succeed Antonio Gutierrez. She is very well suited to the role, understanding the global south and great power competition.

The Palestinian terror attack this morning would have been an even worse catastrophic event had the @IDF not acted so quickly. Will the media give this as much coverage as when olive pickers get detained for failing to report their activities?

Nothing to do with his being Jewish. If he was Christian or even Muslim, his racist and anti-Muslim, anti-Third World mocking would be called out, too. Punching down isn't cool, even if it's humor.
My friend @SachaBaronCohen has spent years confronting hate and disinformation, and @ADL is proud of all the work we've done together. In a world where lies spread faster than facts, that work matters more than ever.   No artist should be pressured, blacklisted or silenced over their Jewish identity. And Jewish artists shouldn’t be subjected to ideological litmus tests.   Thank you, Sacha, for continuing to speak out against hate while making us laugh along the way.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Bruno (2009) labeled Ayman Abu Aita as Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade 'terrorist group leader.' The Palestinian Christian activist denied it, claimed he was misled into the interview, and sued Cohen for ~$110M defamation; settled confidentially in 2012. nypost.com/2012/07/19/fal… theguardian.com/world/2009/dec…
