Division 1 basketball is HARD. Most young players don’t understand how hard. Every time you walk in the gym, you have to be completely on. You can’t be casual. The coaching is demanding and every detail matters. It’s kill or be killed. The earlier you understand this, the better.

Some kids live five minutes away and still won’t come to a workout or pickup. Others will take a bus or drive over an hour just to play. Work with those kids. A lot of kids play basketball. Not all of them truly love it.

Club mergers almost never work. They usually last 1-2 years. Kids who don’t make the “super team” resent their home club, directors clash over playing time and choosing a coach becomes political. Whoever gets the job is accused of favouring “their” players.

One of the biggest problems in AAU is too many clubs trying to do circuits and “elite” basketball in small areas without enough talent. If they worked together the area could be well represented, but it’s so hard to get people to work together. The talent just gets diluted.

Basketball has a lying problem. Everybody says they want to win. Until winning means fewer shots, harder defense, a smaller role, passing up good for great, and cheering when you thought you’d play more. Everybody wants the trophy. Few want the truth it takes to earn it.

Pickup tells you so much about a player. Do they talk? Move without the ball? Set pin-downs and staggers? Basket cut? Exchange weak side? Make the extra pass? Know who should get the ball at game point? Do they foul layups on game point? You see who understands how to play.

Faith oftentimes means trusting God’s character without understanding God’s actions.
No matter your situation, good or bad, God is still God— he can’t lie, he keeps promises, he’ll never forsake you, and he always loves you.

Hot take: School should start after Labor Day and end before Memorial Day. Kids deserve a longer summer 🤷♂️

God already loves you.. before you accomplish anything, before you produce anything. You can’t make him love you more, and you can’t make him love you less. There is NOTHING that can separate you from His love.
People talking bad on me and my program. Hate to see it. I’m easy to find, talk to me don’t talk behind me then wave to me when you see me. I know I can stand on 10 toes that I’ve done everything the right way and been about the kids first. Head above the noise though 💆🏽♂️🧘🏽♂️ #KSGD

The longer you’re around girls basketball, the more you realize how many parents are chasing a college scholarship for their daughter - for the money they’ll save on tuition, the bragging rights, or to keep living vicariously through their kid.
What’s surprising is how few seem to ask the most important question: Does my daughter actually love playing basketball enough to want to keep doing it for four more years?
