Fukuyama on meeting Qaddafi: "He had a zero-sum view of wealth: wealth could not be created, only taken from someone else. I asked him then where Bill Gates—at that time one of the richest men in the world—got his money. Qaddafi said he stole it from his customers. I pointed out that they got useful software in return; he thought about it a bit and said that Gates stole it from the companies that made computers." richardhanania.com/p/cosplay…

A group of hackers published classified data on Russian soldiers killed in the war, from Russia's statistics agency Rosstat. In late August, the total was 450,100 (around 100k per year). It is in line with other independent estimates. There is also a regional breakdown.
Please sack Xabi in the tunnel. I'm tired of watching my team be unable to build up against relegation level teams

A strong pro-Ukraine post election wind at our back, we must push right away to impose sanctions waived by Trump, stop his despicable diesel deal, provide military aid, particularly air defense—& other measures to show support necessary to bring Putin to serious peace talks. washingtonpost.com/opinions/…
Nah. I’m a very pro-market person, but this idea that young people only like socialism because of *crony* capitalism is pure libertarian cope. Fact is, a competitive market does *not* allow for small businesses to thrive when significant structural barriers to entry (e.g., capex, economies of scale, network effects) allow large corporations to take larger and larger shares of the economy and increase profits. Amazon and Walmart didn’t crush small businesses because they were beneficiaries of crony capitalism; they did it because they are more competitive and efficient than a small business can ever be.
Imo, young people have a very Pikettian view of things: under capitalism, the returns to capital outstrip (or, at least, have outstripped) the returns to labor. Young people don’t own capital, and the price of capital has risen in line with its returns, so they feel screwed over and locked out. And that difference in return is not purely attributable to corporatism or government intervention. Structural advantages are real! The main goal of the firm is to find markets and opportunities where one can extract excess profits! And capitalism is very good at finding, funding, and rewarding precisely those businesses that manage to do this.
Mind you, I think those high returns to capital are generally a good thing, particularly in venture where it means that we are generating productive innovation. But the argument for the actual benefits of capitalism are not as straightforward as “inequality is because of government cronyism”—it’s a lot more Rawlsian Difference Principle stuff (e.g., the poor are better off under high-growth, high-inequality capitalism than they are under low-growth, low-inequality socialism).
But that is, unfortunately, a MUCH harder sell.
Ron DeSantis explains why the GOP "screaming socialism" doesn't work anymore:
"Young people have a very positive view of socialism compared to capitalism. The question is, why is that? Some of it is the education in our universities. But I think a big part of that is, what they're comparing is not free enterprise versus socialism. What they're comparing is how government gets involved in business, and you have crony capitalism. The best kind of indirect supporters of socialism are some of these corporatist republicans who propagate these crony policies. The average person is seeing that and saying, 'Wait a minute, you're trying to bend the government to funnel benefits to this corporation or that industry. What about having a competitive market? ... Young people really aren't seeing that. They're seeing just a handful of companies that have an outsized influence on our economy and on our society"

Talarico argues pro-business really means pro-big business, socialism for the rich, rugged individualism for everyone else
“I've seen that when people talk about being pro-business, what that usually means is being pro-big business, right?”
“we basically subsidize Walmart through Medicaid because they don't give their employees quality healthcare.”
“So again, socialism for the rich, rugged individualism for the rest of us.”
“And this is not a radical vision. It's what we had before.”
