it bothers me how “down” and “up” can mean the same thing
“are you down for this”
“are you up for this”

Since you’ll hear about it in the news…
It’s not fuel, it’s hydraulic fluid. The 777 has three hydraulic systems; losing one isn’t such a big deal.
Now, why is Boeing & United specifically having such a hard time? They aren’t…you just don’t know this stuff isn’t that unusual & only certain stories get published.
Did you hear about the United Airbus with a hydraulic failure?
What about the United Airbus w/an engine oil warning?
Surely you heard about the American Airbus that landed with a cargo door open! The Alaska 737 that had the same thing got a LOT of coverage…
And who could have missed the Delta Airbus with a flight control malfunction!
Oh…you didn’t hear about those? That’s weird – I wonder why they didn’t get coverage? I mean, they all happened in the last three days…
It’s almost as if someone is choosing what you hear & what you don’t based on how worked up they can get you & how much advertising they can generate.
Don’t let them. They will sensationalize stuff that people who work in this industry consider mundane – in part, because they don’t know better & because they are counting on you not knowing, either.
(Thanks to @avherald for their coverage - the source of the pics. They report these incidents w/o bias & understand these things are not a sign the sky is falling)
A flight from Australia to San Francisco took off with fuel coming out of the rear landing gear 😳
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
There are no fuel lines routed through the landing gear bay of a 777, making a fuel leak improbable.
Rather, this was a hydraulic leak; there are multiple hydraulic lines in the landing gear bay. The crew lowered the landing gear using alternate methods & returned safely

Apparently this is *not* a phishing text—"aka.ms" is, confusingly, an internal @Microsoft URL shortener but has also been used externally for at least 4 years. Also, who knows what "alcs" means here?
This is bad and trains users to click on suspicious links. 🤦♂️
Spicy thread: github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azu…
The bureaucratic shade is my favorite part.

ALT Last message in linked thread: "We understand your concerns and frustrations. As a content organization, we've stepped away from using the aka.ms URLs; however, outside of our organization they are still in use. While we've talked to the product teams about this, they feel they are still of use and continue to use them. Because this thread is about the documentation, I'm going to close it to commenting now. @dknappettmsft please lock this conversation. Thanks!"
It’s disappointing to me how much anti-AV propaganda is out there. I’m glad Cruise quickly set the record straight on this one.

Personally looking forward to the day all human drivers (including myself!) are replaced by autonomous drivers. Meanwhile if the Uber driver and taxi medallion lobby gets their way, people will continue to die every day in entirely preventable accidents caused by human drivers.
There are literally > 500 Cruise and Waymo vehicles driving nearly all day, every day in SF. None have been involved in a serious accident, none have been at-fault in an accident. This is incredible. I’ve personally been in 2 Ubers where the driver caused an accident.
Despite data proving AVs are safer than human drivers, it seems like some have a lot more to say about Cruise and Waymo’s failures (both genuine and assumed) than their successes.
