10 years ago, in October 2016, we published the 1st version of our speculative Mars Colonization Timeline. As the timeline is regularly updated and expanded, it now differs significantly, and we thought it would be interesting to revisit the original: humanmars.net/2026/10/the-or…

Japan’s getting really good at bringing space rocks home. If asteroid mining ever takes off, that experience could give them a serious head start. On the 20th, they’re launching MMX on an H3 rocket to Phobos, one of Mars’ moons. The plan is to land twice, collect about 10 grams of material, and bring it back. Nobody’s ever brought samples back from the Martian system. Hayabusa brought home the first asteroid samples. Hayabusa2 followed up at Ryugu, collecting material from multiple spots. Japan’s been building on that experience ever since. Everyone else is racing to land on Mars or build Moon bases. Japan’s quietly getting better at one thing: bringing a piece of space home.

JUST IN: NASA says its Moon Base is running ahead of schedule, with the first element now expected to launch in December followed by near-monthly robotic missions to the lunar surface beginning in early 2027. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency expects to beat the original national-space-policy target of putting the first Moon Base elements in place by 2030. The plan is to send infrastructure, rovers and other equipment ahead of astronauts so hardware is already operating on the surface when crews arrive. NASA is also developing a public website that will allow people to follow construction of the lunar base as missions arrive. “We’re leaving no doubts this time,” Isaacman said. “It’s all in HD.”

Earth moon cycler orbits are interesting especially if an industrial base is set up on the moon.
What if a spacecraft could cycle between Earth and Moon orbits, performing multiple circuits of each, naturally and indefinitely, with zero propulsion? We’ve discovered a new class of stable, prograde, low-energy cycler orbits that do just that. Why these orbits matter: Ballistic → fuel-free Stable → long-term ready Near-chaotic → agile with low ΔV Low-energy → access to Earth/Moon, Lagrange points, Sun–Earth L1/L2, even heliocentric space At the AAS/AIAA Astrodynamics Specialist Conference in Boston next week, I’ll present on a new family of ballistic Earth-Moon cycler orbits that are stable, prograde, and mission agile—unlike any cyclers in the current literature. The example below is shown in both the Earth-Moon rotating frame and inertial frame. Conference Paper: ross.aoe.vt.edu/papers/ross-…

Looks like a scene from Interstellar.
After approx. 24 days at sea, the SpaceX Recovery team successfully guided Starship to a location just off the coast of Christmas Island. A team of SpaceX engineers is on their way to conduct additional analysis on the vehicle in calmer waters before attempting to return it to Starbase
