In a call with Canada’s Minister of National Defense, David McGuinty, I extended my condolences on the loss of military service members in the fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, and wished those injured a speedy recovery. We also reviewed prospects for Saudi-Canadian defense cooperation, discussed regional developments and ways to promote security and stability, and condemned the Houthi terrorist attacks against the Kingdom.

Today, an act of terrorism violated the sanctity of a funeral at a church in the Jordanian city of Karak. Families had gathered to mourn; instead, they became the targets of a horrific attack. Canada condemns this violence in the strongest terms. My deepest condolences to the members of the Greek Orthodox Church and to those grieving this loss, and I wish the injured a full recovery. I have been in contact with my counterpart, Foreign Minister @AymanHsafadi, to express Canada’s solidarity with the Jordanian people. We will remain in close contact as we stand together in defence of religious freedom, human dignity and the fundamental right to worship in peace.

Canada’s nuclear sector supports more than 90,000 jobs across the country and includes more than 250 Canadian companies. I met Türkiye’s Minister of Trade, Dr. Ömer Bolat, to discuss opportunities for Canadian companies in Türkiye’s energy sector, including nuclear, and how we can continue building on our strong economic relationship. We also discussed opportunities in aerospace and technology. As Canada and Türkiye explore opportunities around a free trade agreement, we’re focused on creating more opportunities for Canadian businesses, strengthening our energy partnerships and supporting more good jobs across the country.

We were pleased to support @Gulf_Research on a new policy brief examining the evolution of the Canada-Saudi relationship 🇨🇦🇸🇦, the growing momentum in our bilateral ties, and opportunities for deeper cooperation.
The Gulf Research Center (GRC) just published a policy brief titled “Saudi-Canada Relations: Strategic Consolidation and Future Horizons,” as part of its project with the Embassy of Canada to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia @CanEmbSA. The paper argues that Saudi Arabia and Canada are no longer merely restoring relations; rather, they are positioning themselves as pragmatic middle-power partners capable of advancing shared objectives in economic security, energy transition, technological innovation, and regional stability through 2030 and beyond. On September 17, 2026, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the European Parliament, advocating for a profound new strategic partnership between #Canada and the European Union. He suggested collaboration on critical minerals, artificial intelligence, defense, and trade. The speech was delivered the day after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed that Canada become the EU's inaugural "associate member" in her State of the Union address. Carney expressed his enthusiasm for Canada's invitation to become the EU's inaugural "associate member," despite his consistent reference to the concept as a "alliance" rather than "associate membership." He stressed that any outcome would respect Canadian sovereignty and be subject to a final vote in Canada's Parliament, and that the ultimate terminology would be determined by Brussels. Carney indicated that the concept was still in its infancy and required further development in anticipation of the #EU-Canada summit scheduled for Montreal in late October, as polling indicates that an overwhelming majority of Canadians favor significantly stronger ties with Europe.
