The biggest misread of anyone predicting the end of software engineering was imagining that the world only needed a certain amount of software, and bringing automation to the field would reduce the need for labor.
Exactly the opposite is happening where essentially most things are actually turning into software. Because agents can use tools, work with computers, write software on the fly, and process data like humans (but far faster), we can now throw “software” at problems that never could reasonably be digitized before.
What that leads to is the role of engineering taking on greater importance in the economy, because we can now engineer far more systems and processes than were possible before.
If you’re a bank trying to do new forms of trading, engineers are often your first bet. If you are in life sciences, you expect more and more research and lab work to be engineering centric. If you’re in manufacturing, you’re trying to automate more of the supply chain, all that is engineering. More and more work is shaped like software problems.
Yes we’re not going to be coding manually in the future. But almost everything will be code, which means those that understand it are in a fantastic position.
Some observations about the "total" automation of software engineering:
1. There are more software engineers now than in 2025, and demand is growing.
2. Software engineers have never worked harder than they do now.
3. They largely don't write code anymore, agents write ~100% of the code.
4. The bottom line of the companies that employs these engineers and agents (i.e. the terminal purpose of all this code) is typically not budging as a result of AI adoption.
This is why you have to think in terms of systems. Automating one aspect of a system creates its own friction and moves the bottlenecks elsewhere.

"Long-horizon tasks are still a joke. They do not work, and I do not care what anybody says. Do not show me a stupid evaluation. Do not tell me about some dumb script you ran for 48 hours. Long-horizon tasks are not handled well. They simply do not work."
- Chamath at Stanford AI Club
"2nd, complex problems also do not work. They are neither addressed nor handled well.
Why is this important? If AI develops like any other technology, we are going to experience an initial rise—the hype cycle. Then, we will see a natural contraction because, somehow and somewhere, something is going to fail. We are all going to see this, and then we will enter what is called the “trough of disillusionment.” I think the business and MBA folks will confirm whether that is true.
Afterward, you typically see the slow and gradual adoption of the real, final solution. This happened with the internet, and it has happened in many other cases.
The problem is that we are spending hundreds of billions, potentially trillions, of dollars trying to figure out how to cross this chasm. So, what do we do?
If we do not figure this out, people will reach the trough of disillusionment and say that AI was a joke. I think we need to be able to bring AI into highly complicated environments and make it work.
What is my solution? At a very basic level, you need a symbolic space that guides the embedded space."

Eric Schmidt: If I could invest in only 1 AI theme, it would be long reasoning.
A model that can stay on 1 problem for hours/days is a completely different thing from a model that answers and stops, and most people still have not priced that difference.

Stephen Miller’s speech at Charlie Kirk’s memorial was essentially plagiarized. See if you can spot the similarities.
The Storm is Coming by Joseph Goebbels (1932)
“So our dead comrade Horst Wessel wrote, and we are fulfilling his prophesy. The others may lie, slander, and pour their scorn on us — their political days are numbered.”
“They promised you, workers, citizens and creative Germans, a Reich of freedom and beauty and dignity.”
“People, rise up, and storm, break loose!”
“You are the witnesses, the builders, the will-bearers of our idea and our worldview.”
“Well, we the people have awakened! We have risen against oppression, 15 million people have joined in an army of revenge.”
“You, men, women and comrades, are the bearers, witnesses, builders and finishers of this unique people’s uprising… We have served the truth, and only the truth. For twelve years, they have insulted and outlawed and slandered and persecuted us.”

Scientists have been publishing climate models since ~1970.
A good way to evaluate their skill is to compare what they expected to happen in the years after the model was published to observed climate changes.
It turns out most models were pretty spot-on:

Since Allegheny is likely going to be one of the first vote drops on Election Night, consider these county numbers:
2016: Clinton: 56.55%, lost by 0.7.
2020: Biden: 59.6%, won by 1.2.
2022: Fetterman: 63.4%, won by 5.
The closer Harris is to 60% or over, the better her chances.

🧵I’ve read through the evidence section—the first 85 pages—of Jack Smith filing on Trump’s private criminal efforts to stay in power despite knowing that he’d lost the election.
The evidence is stunning. It’s clear why Trump did not want the public to see this testimony.

Israel has been systematically using human shields in this conflict. The evidence has become too great to ignore. Let's recap what has come to light so far.
In January, The Times of Israel reported that "A Palestinian shop owner said Israeli troops used him as a human shield to protect themselves during a raid on the town of Dura in the West Bank yesterday.
Cellphone footage showed Baha Abu Ras being marched up a street by a soldier who guided him from behind with one hand and kept a rifle resting on his shoulder with the other. Two Israeli soldiers advanced carefully behind them, their rifles raised. Abu Ras said he had been taken from his cellphone shop in Dura, near the city of Hebron, after Israeli soldiers searched the premises during a raid in which Palestinian officials said two Palestinians were shot dead."
That month, Mondoweiss reported that the IDF went into the apartment of a Palestinian family in Khan Younis and took 26 year old Ahmad Safi with them.
"The next morning on January 23, the Israeli soldiers ordered Ahmad, his father, his brother, and the rest of his cousins to move outdoors and instructed them to move horizontally in front of the armored military cars.“As they ordered us to stop and stand still, I found myself again a few meters away from the resistance military base,” Ahmad said. “ That was the moment I realized that we were being used as human shields.”
"Moments later, an intensified exchange if gunfire broke out while Ahmad and his family were in between the Israeli soldiers and the resistance fighters, with no shelter. They stretched their bodies on the ground, in a helpless attempt to take cover.
“We kept screaming in Arabic, ‘stop shooting,’ and a few moments later the shooting stopped,” Ammar, another one of Ahmad’s cousins, told Mondoweiss. They were forced to remain there for over 12 hours, conscripted by the Israeli soldiers as unwilling human shields.
By the end of it, they were dehydrated and could barely stand on their feet. Soldiers forced them to kneel in the middle of the street as they took cover behind Ahmad and his male relatives.
In May, the Washington Post reported that Israel had taken a 39 year old man out of his home at night. He was found shot after the IDF withdrew. " The family found Rajai’s body hours later, after the soldiers had withdrawn. They suspect soldiers used him as a human shield to confront militants in a downstairs apartment and then shot him, a claim the Israeli military denies."
In June, AP reported that the IDF had a 24-year-old strapped to the jeep circulated on social media, sparking widespread condemnation, including from the United States. Many said it showed that Israeli soldiers were using him as a human shield. The army admitted that he was not a suspect of any terrorist activity.
First he had been shot by the IDF before being tied. The State Department confirmed that this had happened and stated, " Civilians should never be used as human shields. The IDF should swiftly investigate what happened and hold people accountable."
In August, One soldier told Haaretz "that the IDF has been using Palestinian civilians as human shields during operations in Gaza, ordering them to go into tunnels and homes that the army fears may be booby-trapped.“It is better that they explode and not the soldiers,” one of the soldiers speaking to Haaretz recalls being told by his commander who justified the practice.
Haaretz says the IDF has not been using terror suspects but rather innocent civilians who it detains specifically for this practice.
According to the report, "The Palestinian men are told that they’ll be released after completing one “mission,” another soldier recounted. He said that the Palestinians were kept with the troops for varying lengths of time, ranging from one or two days to a week.
The newspaper alleged this practice has been widely employed across the Gaza Strip in recent months, and that senior IDF staff — including Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi — were aware. The IDF knows “that it’s not a one-time incident of a young and stupid commander who decides to take someone of his own accord,” one of the soldiers said.
One soldier said he was charged with guarding a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager ahead of the mission he’d been selected for. “You keep quiet and try to convince yourself, ‘ok, let’s go, let’s use them,'” the soldier said. “They tried to explain it in a rational way, but at the end of the day, you have a 16-year-old boy sitting inside the house handcuffed, with his eyes covered.”
The practice is illegal according to international law, and in 2005, Israel’s Supreme Court ordered the military to stop using Palestinians as human shields. Yet the practice endures. There are many other such cases. This must stop.

It’s taken me a week to fully comprehend the genius of “White Women for Kamala” and “White Dudes for Harris.”
One thing right-wingers love is to complain that you can only have affinity groups for blacks and other minorities. Whites sometimes feel like they’re being held to double standards and treated unfairly.
Along comes the Kamala campaign and says it’s ok to be white. That is, as long as you’re a good person, which means supporting reproductive freedom, not being “weird,” and voting Democrat. We’re all in this together.
It seems “woke” on the surface, but it’s actually a sign that liberals are moving away from woke. In 2020, something like this wouldn’t have even been possible. Talk of “whites” in left-coded spaces only occurred in the context of flogging them for their sins. In 2024, you can be a white dude for Kamala and it’s totally cool. The symbol for “White Dudes for Harris” is a trucker hat, showing self-deprecating humor and membership in a movement that is not at all weird or neurotic about race.
White people receive the message that Democrats do not consider you the problem. You’re welcome into the coalition. There’s even a Zoom call you can join, and don’t worry, it won’t be just Robin DiAngelo telling you how much you suck. Kamala has made clear that she’s *only* considering white men for VP, and there couldn’t be a clearer signal that we’re past peak woke.
DEI therefore doesn’t always mean anti-white! Now you White Dudes get your own DEI pick, like everyone else.
Republicans have been caught flat-footed. Conservatives want to portray these events as a kind of 2020 DEI struggle session, and they can find clips backing up that view, but people who have attended say that there was actually very little of that.
What else can conservatives say in response? I’ve seen a little bit of “why can’t we have a whites for Trump thing?” Well, who’s stopping you? It’s a free country. Organize “whites for Trump” and see what happens. Democrats have given you permission. Zoom can’t accuse you of violating the terms of service if you schedule the exact same event just with the parties switched.
There will be no “Whites for Trump” event because the campaign would never allow it, understanding it would be a PR nightmare. “Whites for Trump” would draw sewer dwellers, instead of the nice, seemingly normal people that came out for Harris. The Vance pick has only reinforced this message, with the signal that the Trump campaign is standing with the most dysfunctional and least sympathetic whites. Most whites do not feel like they have much in common with overweight Appalachians blaming China for taking their jobs when they’re too lazy and dysfunctional to just move to a region with more opportunity, which every generation of Americans has managed to do since the founding. Vance’s comments that we’ll pay any price as long as one American gets to make toasters communicates how the GOP ticket is running to represent the truly hopeless.
All of this contributes to the overall message that Democrats are not the anti-white party. They’re the party of the civilized half of the white race, the ones who believe in science and reject conspiracy theories. The whites who aspire to do something other than make a toaster, complain about immigrants, and investigate the miscarriages of strangers.
We can now all see the hopelessness and stupidity of white nationalism, which wants to argue that the 220 million American whites who are at each other’s throats over social issues and values should unite under one umbrella because they share the same interests. The only way white identitarianism would have had any hope is if liberalism stayed in summer of Floyd mode indefinitely, where you push anti-white rhetoric so blatantly and aggressively that it causes a natural reaction.
Whites for Kamala completely defuses any hope of building a broad white identitarian coalition. It exposes white nationalism, whether explicit or the implicit kind taking over the right, as at bottom a movement for *maladjusted whites* most of their betters want nothing to do with.
The thing about Republicans ruining Thanksgiving dinner hits home, because most whites who have achieved some level of success in life, or at least aspire to do so, have aggressively stupid catturd-type relatives they want to avoid. They define themselves in opposition to such people.
This is how the left wins.
