Una sabi critic mehn!
There’s this weird and funny dynamics that happen in Afrobeats. Whenever a major star goes missing in action (MIA), another artiste rises quickly to cart away their fanbase. 😊
Omah Lay went MIA for a while. Llona appeared and carried his ‘Afro-Depression’ fanbase wholesale. Omah Lay has returned with ‘Clarity of Mind’ but the landscape has shifted.
Odumodublvck left music to fight on top woman matter. In the twinkle of an eye, 6uff and Tuff King has carried his ‘Afro-Thug’ fanbase.
This is the same mistake Rema is making. His album is long overdue and he failed to capitalise on the momentum he built with ‘Fun’ and following singles like ‘Baby (Is it a Crime’, ‘Bout U’ and ‘Kelebu’.
While Rema has been dulling, Victony and Blaqbonez have cannibalised his fanbase. Both have dropped stellar albums this year that reset the genre, leaving Rema to play catch up.
The only person that played this game right is Asake. He went MIA throughout last year. On his return, he had the common sense to know that he needed to recharge his fanbase.
He tested the waters with a collaborative project ‘Real Vol. 1, EP’. Who was on the project? None other than Wizkid - another artiste whose active fanbase (Wizkid FC) has been dying to hear from. The project was well received and gained Asake some new fans.
Asake will go on to drop ‘M$NEY’ three months later to both critical and commercial success.
Another key thing that helped Asake is that no artiste is quite like him in the industry. There is no 1:1 replacement. FOLA comes close, but leans more towards RnB than Asake’s Afro-Pop.
The lesson? In a world of short attention spans and a multitude of talents, you cannot afford to go MIA. Your fans will move on. You will return to feed on the remnants that falls off your replacement’s table.
Blaqbonez dropped ‘NO EXCUSES’ in October 2025. ‘NO EXCUSES’ Deluxe arrived in April 2026. By October 2026, a follow-up album has arrived - ‘NOMADINHO: 4TH PRIME’.
What does this show you? An artiste that deeply understands the market.
The Afrobeats market rewards prolific artistes. It was why Asake went from underground to A-list in two short years (2022 - 2024) with three albums.
FOLA understands the assignment. He dropped his debut ‘catharsis’ last year. This month, his sophomore album ‘9’ arrived.
Dear Afrobeats artiste, create more. Innovate more. Experiment more.
The market will reward you. 🙏🏽❤️
