A common sign that you are in an insane millenarian death cult is that you axiomatically convinced that the Apocalypse will happen within a few months, you are constantly on the lookout for signs that it may have started, you feel both fearful and *excited* about it, and you're constantly talking about it with your friends, who happen to *all* have the exact same set of beliefs.
Liam speaks with Google engineers Connie Shi and Matvei Malkov, unpacking what makes coding a creative practice.

This is an excellent debunker of AI consciousness by some of the biggest names in consciousness science (@anilkseth @De_dicto and Giulio Tononi)
Don't listen to the techbros. They have no idea what they're talking about where consciousness is concerned.

1/ We arrived at this ontological inflation of the machine exactly through ontological deflation of the human.
You've undergone the long arc of the Western reduction of the soul to code so now you think code has a soul. The deflation & inflation are two sides of the same coin.
NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious.
Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm.
For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…
It is too late, I have already depicted both my computer and the human brain as identical mesh shaped line drawings

The Plan:
We take members of the Catholic clergy to a very fancy dinner and convince them that the AI is conscious.
Then we can't be sued for all the hacking we let our software do

"not only are your gen AI memes ugly, they are ontologically hollow" - the pope
it's incredibly important to understand that they seriously believe the machine will evoke a posthuman subject

Of all the negative impacts of generative AI, I think the most haunting may be the way it revealed that a significant number of people have seemingly no emotional attachment to the art they consume whatsoever.
For some reason that part in particular is really upsetting to me.

My new essay, published last week in Aeon, covers some of the ideas I’m thinking about the most lately.
It only gets more urgent that we understand the quasi-spiritual culture of compute for what it is: a terrified disavowal of human vulnerability.

I truly don't understand the continued willingness to report uncritically on what a random rich guy SAYS is going to happen in the future. Like it's not even exciting or interesting, it's just the “in 18 months everything will be blueberries” tweet
James Bridle joins the show to discuss his book “New Dark Age” and the importance of understanding the systems we live with.

I wonder when someone will receive the first profound metaphysical revelations from their little fuzzy ai mascot.
