EU private-sector transport stakeholders have largely embraced the rightward shift in MEPs following the EU elections over the summer.
Indeed, for the transport industry, this political realignment seems to represent a chance to reshape, and in some cases re-negotiate, the European regulatory environment away from the climate ambition of the last mandate, towards a more pro-industrial policy landscape.
For NGOs and pro-climate stakeholders, this new political reality raises new challenges which are, arguably, in many ways new for them.

Yesterday's debate in Brussels shed light on the stark challenges facing Europe's automotive sector. Leaders and MEPs convened to discuss the crisis sparked by the shift to low-carbon technologies, supply chain disruptions, and intensifying Asian competition.
🔑 Key Takeaways:
🌟 Valdis Dombrovskis, EVP of the European Commission, warned about the threat of cheaper electric cars from China and emphasised the need for trade defence measures to ensure fair competition.
🌟 Jens Gieseke (European People's Party) cautioned against focusing solely on electric vehicles, advocating for a diversified approach that includes climate-neutral fuels.
🌟 Mohammed Chahim (Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament) sounded the alarm: "China is outpacing us in every way." He urged increased investment in flagship projects like battery production to reduce external dependence and boost local jobs.

Breaking News: EU Member States Back Tariffs on Chinese Electric Vehicle Imports
The European Commission's proposal to impose definitive countervailing duties on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China has gained the necessary support from EU member states. This is a pivotal step in the Commission's anti-subsidy investigation.
Here's a quick rundown of the developments:
🔹 Voting Results:
10 countries in favour, including France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
12 countries abstained.
5 countries against, including Germany and Hungary.
🔹 Tariff Rates:
Tesla: 7.8%
BYD: 17%
Geely: 18.8%
SAIC: 35.3%
Other cooperative EV producers: 20.7%
Non-cooperative producers: 35.3%
These tariffs, set to take effect in November, will be added to the existing 10% rate, potentially pushing total tariffs above 45% for some Chinese carmakers.
How will China react? Will consumers or the green transaction pay the price? Feel free to share your thoughts below!

Top Executives Urge EU to Uphold 2035 Zero-Emission Target for Cars and Vans
A coalition of chief executives and top brass from 50 companies has issued a clarion call to the EU, urging it not to revisit the 2035 zero-emission target for cars and vans. The appeal, made public today, comes from leaders in the #automotive, clean tech, #transport, and #energy sectors, including heavyweights such as Volvo Cars, A.P. Moller - Maersk, Uber, and Europe’s largest leasing company, Ayvens.
The 2035 target, which aims to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from new cars and vans, is described by the executives as both “feasible and necessary”. In a statement, they emphasised that the target provides a clear trajectory for businesses and stakeholders to drive the required transformation and offers crucial investment certainty for the automotive industry in Europe.

The city council of The #Hague has just approved the world's first outright ban on outdoor advertising related to fossil fuels.
Starting next year, advertisements for fossil fuels, petrol hashtag#cars, air travel, and hashtag#cruise hashtag#ships will be prohibited from public spaces in The Hague.
This decision is part of a broader trend, as political parties across France, Sweden, and the Netherlands advocate for stricter regulations on fossil fuel advertising.

Today, we published an in-depth analysis in the Green Mobility Magazine, examining the critical challenges and opportunities facing the EU's transport sector as it pursues decarbonisation, as outlined in the hashtag#DraghiReport.
The report highlights significant hurdles, including infrastructure gaps, digital divides, and intense competition from China. It underscores the urgent need for coordinated planning and investment to meet the EU's ambitious climate targets.
Key findings include:
🚛 The transport sector accounts for a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, with emissions remaining stubbornly high.
🛢 The lack of EU-level planning for transport competitiveness is hindering progress towards sustainable mobility.
🚗 The automotive sector is losing ground to China, which is now one generation ahead in EV technology and production.
💰 Decarbonising the transport sector will require over €100 billion in annual investments through 2050.
✈️ Aviation and maritime transport face significant challenges, with limited public support and a risk of carbon leakage.
The Draghi Report serves as a wake-up call for the EU to address these pressing challenges and capitalise on the opportunities presented by decarbonisation.
A coordinated and pragmatic approach is needed to secure a sustainable and competitive future for the EU's transport sector.

Some big news from the European Commision; the EU will Invest €7 Billion in Sustainable Transport Infrastructure across the Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (#CEF)!
A total of 134 projects will be supported, including initiatives to improve railways, inland waterways, and maritime routes along the trans-European transport (TEN-T).
The big winner will be #railways, which will obtain 80% of the €7bn in funding, some big projects include RB Rail AS | Rail Baltica, and the Lyon-Turin rail route.
Commissioner for Climate Action and responsible for transport, Wopke Hoekstra, commented, “This is the largest call under the current CEF Transport programme. The selected projects will help transform Europe’s transport network, making cleaner transport modes more efficient and attractive for passengers and freight while enhancing safety across the TEN-T. I am especially pleased that several projects supporting the EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes have been funded. These new corridors are of key importance to help integrate Ukraine and Moldova into the EU.”
