IceCube ∞ 🧊

In 2021, I was introduced to #ICP, the Internet Computer, and I was instantly captivated by how cool and innovative the concept was. Naturally, I started diving deep into the technical underpinnings of the platform. Being someone who enjoys taking notes, I documented a ton of technical details about ICP along the way. At some point, while sharing my findings with friends, I had a lightbulb moment: "Why not turn these notes into articles?" That idea soon grew—articles became chapters, and chapters eventually became a book. I envisioned it as a comprehensive guide to ICP’s technical foundation, with fun, engaging illustrations to make the concepts more accessible. Thanks to the @dfinity Foundation, I secured a grant and by January 2024, I finished the book—Constellation Book. Here’s the link and a few images of the book: neutronstardao.github.io/con… When I got to designing the final chapter of Constellation Book, I wanted it to be more than just a typical DApp tutorial. We didn’t want to close the book with something ordinary. We wanted to build something, you know, cool. I thought, “Why not leverage the unique capabilities of the Internet Computer and create something that would be tough to pull off on other blockchains, but IC handles beautifully—like a social network?” That’s how we came up with the idea of a social DApp based on IC. One that could natively support cross-subnet interactions, wouldn’t buckle under access pressure, and fully took advantage of IC’s canister model. Once I got familiar with ICP, building a DApp seemed surprisingly straightforward. It struck me that, with the right team, just a few developers could create a product on par with those traditionally built by thousand-person teams at legacy tech companies. I began by listing out the key features and user experience I wanted: basic social post interactions and a super smooth, frictionless interface. From there, we designed the technical architecture around those needs. I reconnected with engineer friends who had also been involved with the ICP ecosystem since 2021, and together, we developed the demo for #IceCube. Along the way, we had help from amazing people in the community like @paulliuicp , @domiwoe , @cryptoschindler , and many others, who were invaluable in resolving some tricky technical issues. After a few months of hard work, IceCube’s core functionality is now up and running. The next step for IceCube is to incorporate community feedback and iterate rapidly. IceCube aims to drive the world toward decentralized social networking. One more thing—I don’t believe IceCube needs to raise hundreds or thousands of ICP tokens upfront just to develop the DApp. Instead, we’re focused on creating something fun and useful with an awesome community. Once we’ve built a solid product, then we can think about tokenizing—letting the community’s recognition drive the token, the DApp, and the community toward success. Right now, IceCube is all about building the DApp. No token plans, yet. We love creating fun things and sharing them with the community. The community is our world. We're just a bunch of nobodies—no funding, no company, no salaries—just a group of geeks who are passionate about decentralization. And this is how @icecubeapp got started...
