Thank you to Fatema Alnuaimi and @ADNOCGas for hosting the @ADIPECOfficial Exhibition and Conference 2026 Leadership Roundtable on the long-term opportunity for natural gas and LNG, and to @websterdrake of @BCG for moderating. My four points take on the table 🧵👇

4. LNG bears this out. Its share of international gas trade has risen from 20% in 2000 to 43% in 2024, with volumes set to grow from around 600 bcm to 800 bcm by 2031.

The current Hormuz crisis has shown both the resilience of LNG markets and the limits of flexibility when critical routes come under pressure. Today's resilience is the result of decisions made years ago and today's decisions will shape how markets respond to the next disruption.

Higher shipping costs account for an estimated 70% of the rise in global inflation since February 2026, and around 40% in advanced economies. Christof van Agt Ross, IEF Director of Energy Dialogue, presented this finding at the Joint IEA-IEF-OPEC Technical Workshop on the Security of Energy Flows on 4 November. IEF analysis across 150 economies shows average global headline inflation rising from 3.9% in February to 4.8% in September. Higher shipping costs added an estimated 0.6 percentage points of that increase. In advanced economies, inflation rose from 2.1% to 3.4%, with shipping contributing around 0.5 points. The growing impact of freight costs on consumer prices underline the importance of secure maritime routes and resilient supply chains.
