On October 29, 2025, Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane, unleashing sustained winds of 195 km/h across the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, and Guantánamo. One year on, nearly 1,600 volunteers remain active, supporting families as they recover and helping communities prepare for future disasters.
With the support of the @IFRC, more than 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid have reached Cuba, while solar power systems are helping keep health facilities, water pumps and a water treatment plant running despite ongoing energy challenges.
This is what locally led humanitarian action looks like: volunteers rooted in their communities, backed by international solidarity and sustained support.

"It has been a full year, and the Red Cross is still on the ground. In so many emergencies, global attention quickly moves on to the next headline. But real recovery does not take weeks or months, it takes years. The Red Cross has the capacity to stay for the long haul because our volunteers live in these very communities." – Daniela Fúnez, Cash and Voucher Assitance Coordinator for the @IFRC in the Americas.
One year after Hurricane Melissa, recovery in Jamaica is entering a new phase: helping families rebuild their livelihoods and regain their independence.
As the @Jamaicaredcross, supported by the IFRC, shifts from emergency relief to long-term recovery, farmers, fishers and small business owners are receiving support to restart their lives and strengthen their resilience. ifrc.org/article/one-year-af…
