Dee had a strong sense of his own importance, but he was also a very pious man. That’s why I like @cliffwigtil's stress on self-examination and self-scrutiny in his contribution. Heart work, in other words. It matters.
I think this is true, with the caveat that ‘initiation’ is so polyvalent a term in occultism that it would be fairly simple to conjure up legitimate counter-examples.

Lovely shot of a hand-inscribed Sigillum Dei. Always worth constructing 'by your own ingenium' – lots of pre-printed versions contain an error. Pedant warning: for Dee "Aemeth" is a name for the Sigillum Dei, they're not part of the same title, so it's just "Seal of God".
