| via James Agustin/GMA News

ECONOMIST, FORMER FINANCE USEC ANNOUNCES SENATE BID
Former Department of Finance Undersecretary and economy professor Cielo Magno announced that she will run for a senatorial position in the 2028 elections.
Magno, speaking at a forum in Italy, said that she will focus on healthcare as part of her platforms, as well as reforms in the country’s industrial policy.

Kailangan na ma-amend ang ating mga batas para tulungan ang mga negosyante.
More businesses fail, than succeed and govt should make it easier, and not harder for entrepreneurs to comply and close their books.
Pag mahirap ang proseso, mabilis ang korupsyon.
Imagine a coffee shop owner who finally decides to call it quits. After months of disappointing sales, rising rent, and mounting bills, the owner sells the espresso machine, dismisses the staff, and locks the doors.
The business is closed. Or so the owner thinks.
In the Philippines, shutting down a business does not automatically end its legal and tax obligations. Even after the last customer leaves, government agencies may continue expecting tax returns and other regulatory filings.
For struggling entrepreneurs, the irony is painful: a business that no longer earns money can continue accumulating penalties.
CLOSING IS NOT AS SIMPLE AS WALKING AWAY
Among Filipino entrepreneurs, there is a familiar saying that closing a business is five times harder than opening one.
While the figure is anecdotal, the frustration is real.
A sole proprietor generally needs to coordinate with the barangay, local government, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
Corporations face additional requirements through the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Simply allowing permits to expire does not automatically cancel tax obligations.
THE BIR CAN BE THE BIGGEST HEADACHE
For many entrepreneurs, securing BIR clearance is the most intimidating part.
Business owners must formally report their closure, generally using BIR Form 1905, and settle applicable tax obligations.
Problems arise when the business has unfiled returns or outstanding liabilities, commonly called ‘open cases.’
An entrepreneur who stopped operating years earlier without formally closing the business may discover accumulated compliance problems, penalties, and interest.
Recent BIR reforms have sought to simplify procedures for smaller taxpayers, but faster processing does not automatically erase outstanding liabilities.
EMPLOYEES CANNOT BE FORGOTTEN
Closing a business also carries responsibilities toward workers.
Employers generally must notify affected employees and the Department of Labor and Employment at least 30 days before closure.
Separation pay may be required depending on the circumstances, while outstanding wages, benefits, and statutory contributions must be addressed.
For a struggling coffee shop owner, these expenses arrive precisely when the business has run out of money.
WHEN FAILURE COMES WITH MORE PAPERWORK
The difficulty of closing a business raises a larger question about the country’s entrepreneurial environment.
Government agencies encourage Filipinos to become entrepreneurs, create jobs, and take financial risks. Yet when businesses fail, owners face multiple offices, paperwork, and potential penalties.
Business failure is already expensive. Entrepreneurs lose savings, investments, and years of hard work.
A business-friendly country should not merely make it easier to open a coffee shop. It should also make it reasonably simple to close one.
Failure is already a punishment. Bureaucracy should not make it worse.

"We regret if any senator felt that way kasi as you know, hindi naman talaga intention ‘yun to threathen anyone,” Saad in Poa.
Ayon kay Poa, binasa lang ni Defense counsel Mark Vinluan ang batas ukol sa AMLC sa witness at hindi raw ganoon ang kanilang intensyon. | via @_iancruz / GMA News
