On an ordinary day in 79 CE, Mount Vesuvius exploded. Within a day city of Pompeii was gone, buried under metres of volcanic ash. There’s an Indian goddess who survived the eruption of Vesuvius and stayed under the ash for almost 1,900 years. Thread on Pompeii Lakshmi. 1/19

Professor Ashoke Sen is an extraordinary human. In 2012, he won the inaugural Fundamental Physics Prize, worth $3 million. He could’ve well used the amount for personal luxury, instead he donated a large chunk of it to help students, fund fellowships & support science in India.
Ashoke Sen has been awarded the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal for 2026, becoming the first Indian physicist to receive the honour. Previous recipients include Nobel laureates Chen-Ning Yang, Steven Weinberg and Hans Bethe, who received the medal in its first three years.
