Deeply grateful to Latvia and my dear friend and colleague @Braze_Baiba for taking the initiative to convene an emergency UN Security Council meeting following Russia's horrific and brutal attacks against Ukrainian civilians. While Russia illegally uses the USSR’s permanent seat on the Security Council to shield itself from accountability, Latvia is using its first-ever Presidency to demand it. This is principled leadership in action. Russia must face real consequences for its crimes. We count on the Security Council to be the place where Russia's atrocities are actively confronted, not just discussed. Thank you, Latvia, for your courage, solidarity, and determination to defend the UN Charter when its fundamental principles are under attack. 🇺🇦🤝🇱🇻

"Mēs to tā izbaudām - tīrs prieks! Sajūta ir tāda, it kā mēs būtu atgriezušies situācijā pirms pieciem gadiem," tā par Krievijas un Ukrainas vienošanos par pamieru civiliedzīvotāju evakuācijai no okupētās Olešku pilsētas sacīja kāda no aptaujātajām Hersonas iedzīvotājām. Uz Hersonu devās Latvijas Radio speciālkorespondente Ukrainā @indrasprance. Plašāk:👉ej.uz/dzo3

Please read my article on the political spectacle staged by the Kremlin in Oleshky. Many thanks to @TheAtlantic and @anneapplebaum for their support of Ukraine and the Kherson region at this critical moment.
Get ready for the unfolding of a Russian propaganda operation, carried out with the aid of the White House, in the battered town of Oleshky. From @ZarinaZabrisky, who has been reporting from Kherson, just across the river, since 2023 theatlantic.com/internationa…

"Pat elpot palicis vieglāk,” tā viens no intervētajiem šajās dienās man raksturoja atmosfēru Hersonā, kas tik ilgu klusumu debesīs nav piedzīvojusi kopš 2022.gada. Šodien sāksies cilvēku evakuācija no krievijas armijas okupētajiem Oleškiem (tieši iepretim Hersonai) . Ticības, ka krievija līdz galam ievēros vienošanos, nav, taču ir MILZĪGA vēlme – kaut viss izdotos un tas varētu kalpot par pamatu līdzīgām operācijām citviet Ukrainas teritorijā vai pat kara izbeigšanai. Three waves of ballistic missiles have been launched at Kyiv by Russian “humanitarians” since yesterday evening. They used 21 missiles. Unfortunately, numerous sites across the city have been hit and damaged: ordinary residential buildings, energy facilities, infrastructure at one of the railway stations and the metro, shopping malls, and businesses. Even a monastery is among the damaged sites. Our emergency services are working at all the affected locations. Twelve of our regions came under Russian attack overnight. In Kyiv and across the regions, 34 people were injured, including five children. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Almost immediately after another round of talks, Russia launched a pointed attack. This means there has been no real change in its attitude toward everything that is happening. It is important to keep trying to find the right solutions to end this war. But when Russia responds to negotiations with ballistic missiles, real pressure on Russia is needed to bring about different steps – steps toward ending the killing. Stronger air defenses and the rapid delivery of missiles, the ability to destroy ballistic missile launchers, sanctions over the war – all of this must be in place. I am grateful to everyone who sees the situation for what it is and acknowledges the reality. The aggressor deserves to be treated accordingly. Ukraine deserves support. People's lives deserve protection. Thank you to everyone who stands with Ukraine!

In what Ukraine's military is calling a historic first, a soldier who suffered injuries to both legs on the battlefield was flown to safety by an unmanned aerial drone. His fellow servicemen say the soldier is "a hero" who didn't hesitate to strap himself to the hexacopter drone and fly at low altitude to reach his unit. By @radiosvoboda

Ukrainā ierindnieks 491 dienu pavada ierakumos. Lai izdzīvotu, pats sev nogriež sprādzienā savainoto kāju, viens pats līdz pēdējam notur pozīciju... kamēr mēs - turpinam apkalpot krievijas graudus..💔
Valdības pirmsvēlēšanu solījumi Krievijas graudu tranzīta ierobežošanai nav piepildījušies. Dzelzceļa infrastruktūras maksa nav palielināta par pieteiktajiem 300 %. Tādā apjomā celt tarifu nemaz neļauj Eiropas Savienības normatīvi. lsm.lv/raksts/zinas/ekonomik…

A man who kills civilians, every day, is a "humanitarian" ? Who kidnaps children? Who authorizes soldiers to use torture and rape?
Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff just told Putin he is a humanitarian. This is completely fucking insane.

A trilateral meeting between the leaders of Ukraine, the US, and Russia could help end the war sooner. A trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, China, and the US would do only the opposite: encourage Putin to continue this war. Inviting Putin to such a meeting would feed his appetite for self-aggrandizement and give him a stature he does not deserve. He is not a global leader; he is a war criminal. And Russia is not a global power; it is a global problem. The Russian economy is at least 13 times smaller than America’s and 8 times smaller than China’s, and it continues to shrink rapidly, along with Russians’ living standards. Russia has lost 1.6 million soldiers killed and wounded in a failed war it cannot win and refuses to end. Under heavy sanctions, its technology, industry, and business continue to stagnate. By any pragmatic or moral measure, Putin has no place at the table with presidents Trump and Xi. The only thing that could earn him that seat is a serious step toward peace, such as accepting a ceasefire proposal before any such meeting. Instead, we are seeing the opposite: intensified terror against civilians. As long as he continues this terror, there should be no place for him at any table.

Another Russian ballistic missile attack came in several waves overnight, and once again, there was no early warning from our partners. They again targeted energy facilities and infrastructure, but a medical clinic, a school, a metro station, and ordinary residential buildings were also damaged. In total, the Russians launched 16 ballistic missiles in a deliberate attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The Russians also launched more than 200 drones of various types, including jet-powered “shaheds,” with attacks spanning from the Kharkiv and Dnipro regions to the Volyn, Rivne, and Odesa regions. Sadly, there are casualties. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Those who were injured are receiving assistance. Overnight and this morning, Russia attacked energy facilities in the Vinnytsia, Volyn, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Kharkiv, Ternopil, Odesa, and Rivne regions. In this one night alone, more than 10 energy infrastructure facilities were damaged, and the lights went out for at least 550,000 families. Repair crews are working at the sites. Ukraine never wanted this war, and we have welcomed literally EVERY attempt by our partners to bring this war to a dignified end. We have responded positively to EVERY ceasefire proposal. Russia's response, time and again, has been ballistic missiles, “shaheds,” and killings. Putin not only doesn't want to end this war – he doesn't even want to take any steps toward de-escalation. EVERY ONE of our partners has experienced this firsthand when they heard Russia's refusals. And it is crucial to call things what they are. To call the aggressor an aggressor and help Ukraine defend lives. When deliveries of missiles for Ukraine's air defense are blocked while Russia is granted relief or delays in sanctions, this is, unfortunately, a denial of reality on the part of our partners. The reality is that the war continues, and it continues solely because of Russian strikes and Russia's desire to drag this war out. I thank everyone who recognizes this reality and helps Ukraine!

I don’t know who’s worse: the one who launches a missile at a residential building, or the one who sees the launch and stays silent.
