📍 BREAKING Israeli soldiers detain two Canadians as part of a group of international volunteers helping Palestinians with their olive harvest. Foreign journalists & 15 other volunteers also arrested. Israel wants no witnesses to its crimes. Story still developing.

Avi Lewis' proposal for a wealth tax in Canada would have the same effect - rich would still be very rich, and average Canadians would have way more services and their taxes would be the same. Let's Mamdani Canada
Wait, let me make sure I've got this right. NYC Mayor Mamdani taxed wealthy people on second homes they don't live in, the city's budget got balanced, the rich are still rich, and ordinary New Yorkers didn't get hit with a broad tax increase? That's really all it took?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
NYC FY2027 budget balance used agency savings, $4B+ state aid/authorizations (incl. pension restructuring saving $1.64B), and $500M projected from pied-à-terre tax on luxury second homes—not primarily that tax. nyc.gov/mayors-office/… amny.com/politics/nyc-b… web.archive.org/web/2026051310…

Throughout history, various civilizations have used the crab form as a unique source of inspiration, both in everyday items and in mythological and artistic objects. I've put together a compilation of my previous posts, ranging from 18th-century Chinese export porcelain to ancient Peruvian ceramics and ancient Greek coins. Artifact descriptions (left to right): 1) Crab Tureen -- Jingdezhen, China; Chinese export porcelain, 1736--1795. It's currently in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts. 2) Crab -- Jugyoku, Japan, 19th century (Edo-Meiji period); hornbill ivory. It's currently in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore. 3) Figural vessel depicting a land crab -- Colima culture, West Mexico, 100 BC -- AD 250; red-slipped ceramic with black oxide. It's in a private collection and recorded in the sales archives of Binoche et Giquello, Paris. 4) Crab -- Peru, Moche culture, 6th--7th century; possibly gilded copper. It's currently in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 5)Crab-shaped paperweight -- Japan, 1888. It's currently in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. 6) Bowl: Crab -- Peru, Nasca culture, 2nd--4th century; ceramic. It's currently in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 7) Large Anthropomorphic Crab -- Robert Wallace Martin / Martin Brothers, England, 1880; salt-glazed stoneware. It's currently in the collection of The Box, Plymouth. 8) Bottle, Crab Deity -- Peru, Moche culture, 2nd--4th century; ceramic. It's dated between the 2nd and 4th centuries. 9) Silver didrachm depicting a crab -- Akragas (Agrigentum), Sicily; late 6th -- early 5th century BC.

Greentext summary of the article: >be me, computer nerd >looking into the company that checks your ID when you sign up for websites (Persona) >stumble across a weird hidden web address: "openai-watchlistdb" >why the hell does OpenAI have a watchlist? >dig a little deeper and find the company's secret portal for government agencies >some idiot programmer accidentally left the site's entire source code completely public >didn't have to hack, didn't need a password, literally just clicked download >start reading the code to see what they are actually doing with your data >turns out, when you upload your ID and selfie to use ChatGPT, it does way more than just check your age >an AI scans your face to see if you "look suspicious" >it compares your selfie to a massive database of world leaders, politicians, and criminals >it runs over 200 background checks on you in seconds, including tracking your crypto wallets >saves your face in a biometric database for up to 3 years >if the AI decides it doesn't like your face or background, it flags you >the system has a built-in button for the feds to instantly file a "suspicious activity report" on you to financial police and intelligence agencies >the exact same company taking your passport photo for a chatbot is running a massive surveillance machine for the government
Hackers recently exposed parts of Discord's age verification system by discovering that the frontend code for their partner Persona was publicly accessible on the open internet. This revealed details on how facial age estimation and ID verification are integrated. “Persona's exposed code compares your selfie to watchlist photos using facial recognition, screens you against 14 categories of adverse media (from mentions of terrorism to espionage), and tags reports with codenames from active intelligence programs consisting of public-private partnerships.”

In September 1889, Van Gogh made paintings based on 10 tiny prints. Those prints were wood engravings after paintings by Jean-François Millet. Vincent wasn’t copying a painting directly, but reimagining a ‘translation’ on paper and in black-and-white. He called them free, colourful interpretations, like a musician rearranging someone else’s composition. 🎶🎨 1 ‘Peasant Woman Binding Sheaves (after Millet)’ by Vincent van Gogh, 1889 2 ‘Thresher (after Millet)’ by Vincent van Gogh 1889 3 ‘The Sheaf-Binder (after Millet)’ by Vincent van Gogh,1889 4 ‘The Labours of the Fields’, by Jean-François Millet c. 1865-1890
