Happy #inktober! The month-long social media-based art challenge was created by artist Jake Parker to encourage daily artistic practice. Today’s prompt: “Spiders.”
We thought these two wildly different illustrations — both from the Library of Congress Japanese prints and drawings collection — really exemplify how varied artistic minds can be!
ALT “Tsuchigumo” or “earth spider.” The print shows a man with a sword about to fend off an attacking “earth spider.” Published in the 1880s. Woodcut print by Yoshitoshi Taiso.
ALT A bird perched on a tree branch with blossoms, watching a spider on a web. Published between 1830 and 1850. Ink wash on thin, handmade paper by Hokusai Katsushika.
We are excited to announce the SECOND annual Inktober Artist Retreat with @focusretreats!
Last year we tried our first ever Inktober Artist retreat. It was such a positive growth experience for everyone involved that we decided to do it again this year!

Three time Emmy nominated Artist, @mollycrabapple makes a point against unethical Ai being “inevitable” We live in a democracy, we all have a voice and don’t have to be hostages in the biggest heist of corporate greed, exploitation and public manipulation

I believe it’s only worth giving advice to someone who has genuinely asked for it, and is at exactly the point in their life/career to actually want to hear it and most importantly act upon it. I thought I’d share this, in case someone out there might be in just that right place.
