1st impressions on Threads...
1. Surprisingly it doesn't matter that you don't have the people who you followed before. The irony is that because Twitter switched to an algorithmic 'For You' tab, this is trivial for Facebook to replicate. Simply search out a half dozen people or organizations you followed previously, and the rest 'fills in'.
2. The experience is obviously near identical to Twitter. And the psychologically interesting thing about this is how the 'text scrolling addiction' of Twitter, is kind of all that matters when making the move to Threads. It's remarkably easy to switch. You almost forget you are on a different app.
3. It's busy. The same well known Twitter peeps and organizations that are cross-posting to Threads are getting thousands of likes, and hundreds of comments. This does not feel like a party with just a handful of people.
4. Creating a 'clean' account on Instagram to use on Threads (new email address, no phone number, no contacts upload) means you start with a clean slate - Threads knows nothing about you. This is a delightfully simple way to avert the privacy concerns of Threads. I'm effectively downgrading from 32,000 followers to zero, but it surprisingly doesn't bother me. Hardly anybody was seeing my Tweets anymore on Twitter anyway, due to whatever 'black box shadow ban' my previously covid-centric account had attracted from Musk.
5. No trolls, bots or outrage, so far... And this feels a welcome change. Twitter had devolved to the point where even the most innocent and non-contentious of comments was attracting thumb (and dumb) rage.
6. So far I'm spending 50-50 time between the two apps. Have a feeling this ratio will rise in favor of Threads over time.
Incidentally if you do want to join my nascent 5 followers on Threads, I'm using the same handle as here.
