The mayor of Panama City is offering up his country to data centers rejected in the US. #Panama already has among the highest electricity prices in the region & a huge problem with water needed to operate the Canal. Not to mention the controversy over copper mining.
Mayer’s correct about the stable political environment up to now. But people are pissed at their political system & politicians. Environmental issues are important to younger middle class voters. And there’s huge income gaps between rural & urban areas. Add data centers to the mix and the political situation could become volatile. (But, maybe that’s exactly what Mayer wants so he can run for president promising “order.” 🤔). @LinaVegaAbad @cristyramirezp @willycochez @radiopanama @prensacom @EstrellaOnline @hbrownarauz @YapEndara
Q: Were you ever a socialist?
Abdul El-Sayed: No. I'm too much of a scientist to actually believe in any sort of ideology.
I just don't do ideology. I'm a person of faith, and everyone else brings evidence.
The idea that you should have guaranteed healthcare in the country, anybody who tells you that's anti-capitalist is not really understanding how capitalism works.

The sex offender registry is also new in america, only starting in the early-mid 90s, and basically every criminologist/psychologist/people with a professional interest in the matter has been saying its a bad idea and should be abolished since then lmao
I love (sincerely) how booktok women share their porn habits to anyone that could ask, I respect their lack of shame

Socialist electeds like Mamdani are useful in associating socialism with good governance, and the inevitable contradictions of having a socialist in bourgeois government should be framed as a demonstration of the insufficiency of existing government rather than a personal failing

Some people don't understand why Marco Rubio is so extremely pro-colonialist, because he is technically of Cuban descent.
But it's important to understand that Rubio does NOT see himself as Cuban. He constantly emphasizes that he is of Spanish (and Italian) descent.
In his latest speech in Greece, in which he again heaped praise on Western colonialism, Rubio proudly described himself as "a great-grandson of settlers who arrived in the new world from Spain".
He heroized European colonialists Hernán Cortés and Christopher Columbus.
Rubio does NOT see his family as Cuban; he sees his ancestors as European colonialists who temporarily lived in Cuba (as wealthy, light-skinned elites who supported the right-wing US puppet dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista), before re-settling in Florida.
This, in fact, is exactly how many conservative, pro-imperialist elites in Latin America see themselves, by the way.
There are still useful idiots out there who deny that the US is an empire.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio just gave another explicitly pro-colonialist speech, boasting that the US is a "continental empire".
He proudly identified the origins of the US empire in the colonization of North America. He totally erased the Indigenous peoples who lived there, referring to it as an "open and wild land" at the time of colonization.
Rubio waxed poetic on the "American frontier spirit", with no mention of the millions of Native Americans who died in the largest genocide in human history.
Rubio also praised the genocidal colonialists Christopher Columbus and Hernán Cortés.
Rubio traced the origins of the US empire back to Alexander the "Great", whom he heroized for "conquer[ing] the entire known world". The US empire has tried to do exactly the same, on top of many millions of corpses.
