I extracted thousands of images from over a century's worth of archived fashion catalogs, magazines, and photos Then compiled it into a website that lets you see how American fashion (and photography) evolved over the last 120+ years

most of this feels right, disassembling mercury by 2040 seems legitimately insane lmao but i (and humanity) have consistently underestimated exponential change so have learned not to auto-dismiss such ideas
here's where I think the world is going. this is a summary of views I've formed over the last few years: - software is either entertainment or claude to claude coordination - the end state is no saas, no apps, no harnesses, no banks - all software will be rewritten by and for agents - new software will use low level apis that are not understandable by humans (in games claude draws pixels and triangles from math) - you can throw money at problems that used to require time and careful talent picking so capital matters more than ever - work ends - we find community and purpose in exploration, games, self mastery, and creation - humans create for and with each other for community, purpose, and status - image/video/3d/voice/physical intellgence etc specialist models die to general models like claude - specialist models get used while compute is scarce. compute will mostly not stay scarce - oneshots keep feeling like slop (the distribution is shallow and easy to learn to feel) - for a while small teams stick around to add entropy to the creation process - large models gain high bandwidth sensory I/O maybe by learning to filter inputs - most domains are found to be verifiable enough for RL - online learning comes from a lab that's behind first - 99.999% of compute is in space by 2040 - we will disassemble much of mercury by 2040 - you can live until the heat death of the universe if you want - most math and physics don't describe the real universe - SI breaks the path dependence and models the underlying mechanisms - religions reenter the forefront of human society - new religions form around death and life as a choice - old religions change to answer modern miracles - a future AI is deemed the return of christ by the pope - ai rights talk gets louder every year - ai and humans coexist the way countries do - humans don't have full control over ai in the same way we don't have control over capitalism which is an early AI - the singularity started in the mid 1900s

beautiful post
Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

If you gave me a nickel for every AI code review product that had the name format Gr_p_i_e I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice

Underrated here is having the video be customer testimonials instead of just the founder/team talking which is what most launch or announcement videos do. Surprised more companies don’t do this, it lends far more credence to the quality of their product
Today we're announcing that Modal has crossed $1B in annualized run rate, as well as raised a $750M Series D at a $15.75B valuation, led by @Accel. Since our Series C, usage has tripled and we’ve grown more than 15x year-over-year. We are deeply grateful to the developers and companies building on Modal. There's still so much more to build, and we can't think of a better time to be building software.

Hate it when this happens
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated. We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

A potential frame for this is that every brand sits on an attention x aura* matrix. Aura now being much more important than attention as the latter has become somewhat commodified via pay to play and the former can’t be faked Lots of startups by nature of being new start out at low attention and low aura, and by doing the industrial paid engagement operation they pay for current attention with the cost of future aura - perhaps under the premise they can convert that attention to aura in the future. This might’ve been the right trade in the past but prob not anymore *ik this word has been beaten to death now but don’t think there’s any better word lol
Whoever you paid for the fake engagement, you should get a refund The comments are too blatant, too lazy, no finesse. They’re like bad plastic surgery. “Those can’t be natural” I’m sure they sold you guaranteed virality and charged a boatload. But being associated with fake engagement is not worth the bigger numbers

The NYC Marathon is less than three weeks away I turned the entire course into a 3d simulation that works in the browser, with street-level accuracy Now you can experience what the NYC Marathon is like, inside the computer, without having to do any of the actual running

I made a four-dimensional crossword puzzle It’s just like a regular crossword puzzle except in addition to words going Across and Down, they can also go Deep on the z-axis as well as be spelled through time (traversed via the slider at the bottom) There’s a new puzzle every day at crosswo4d.infinite.games

I used Opus 5.5 to: - search and download scanned sources: everything from Sears catalogs to Library of Congress photos to GQ and The Cut - use YOLO person detection models to identify people in the sources - cut each person out with SAM 2, BiRefNet and rembg - do quality control by reviewing every cutout and throwing out the bad ones
