Built my first iOS app in 2010.
Then a master’s, a switch to backend, and years off iOS.
Last year I came back. now I’m building Grabie (a restaurant POS) with a co-founder, shipping iOS apps solo, and freelancing.
Posting new learnings and what past taught me.
Key learnings between backend and iOS dev
1. iOS is easier if you don't have any internet based deps
2. iOS releases are hard, make them count, don't ship tiny things, but medium size features, app review times might kill you
3. testing in production isn't an option
HexiPop v1.1.0 got rejected.
The reason: Guideline 2.1, the gist AppTracking does not show up on iPadOs 27.0.1, still in review.
Adding ads to an iOS app? Check that app tracking pop up shows before you hit submit.
What is an "associate software engineer"? I've seen this only in Greece. No offence to the people having this title, but how is it justified? Why are using law firm's title schemes?
Tip for iOS devs: Don’t create big bang releases. Release an early small version of your app get your app reviewed quickly. On the later releases they review less things hence it goes faster.
Shift close used to mean a waiter counting cash and receipts for 20 minutes.
In Grabie it takes 2 taps: payments collected, card vs cash, done ✅
I released my first iOS game last month and I'm obsessed with analytics. Every day I look at the sessions on the App Store Connect.
Founders selling to restaurants, bars & hotels: what’s worked better for you, cold visits, referrals from other owners or something else?
For us, both. Being always around is kind of a reminder eventually they convert.
Side project update: HexiPop v1.1.0 just got rejected.
Be careful when implementing admob and ads in general.

It’s mind blowing that the bus ticket from Thessaloniki to Istanbul (~500km distance) costs only 25€? The buss from Thessaloniki to Athens (same distance) costs more than 40€. By car you need ~60€ just for gas and ~20€ for tolls. Last year the bus costed 30€ 🤯 🤯
Which ad platform are you mobile devs using these days. I tried AppLovin but sign ups are closed. Is still AdMob still the go to service?
Lately I found this nifty tool for managing your AppStore assets, align everything and get ready before the launch/release. It has minor bugs, but it's better than nothing.
