One month after the launch of NOIRLab IRAF v2.18, we've had 1142 unique users from 50 different countries visiting iraf.noirlab.edu/, with almost 3000 views! The software has been downloaded over 500 times, with about 2/3 using the macOS version. @NOIRLabScience @irafnet
Seeing it as “competition” is a choice, calling it a “fork” is wrong, but public trashing of another project is just unprofessional and does nothing to encourage cooperation.
For anyone who may be trying to access their old .imh images that weren't saved as FITS, this may come in handy: gitlab.com/nsf-noirlab/csdc/…

Waiting for Astropy to be a replacement for IRAF is a bit Iike waiting for libc to replace the unix command-line. There's a need, appropriate use and audience for both, it doesn't have to be either/or.

Doug Tody, who was the visionary behind the Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF) has passed away. Tody began working at #KPNO in 1975, devoting 27 years of his career to @NSF’s National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO).

Because the iraf.noao.edu website is now blocked, the CHKUPDATE command in login.cl files is causing the login to hang until the request times out. The solution is to remove the 'chkupdate' command from all instances of login.cl files.
