A brief demo & meditation on personal software I presented at a @getdiffer generative UI meetup last night

My pal @iristenteije has been saying for a while that software is becoming more like content.
Here's what I think the 'software is dead' crowd are missing:
1. The internet commoditised the distribution of content. Suddenly, you didn't need the approval and distribution engine of a newspaper to have millions of people read what you wrote.
2. The same happened with software's distribution, but the barrier to entry was still higher than with content. People with no formal training can create a blog post in an hour that's consumed and enjoyed by thousands or more. Historically not true with software.
3. So as software gets easier and cheaper to make, there are imperfect, but useful analogies for what already happened in content, and what's happening now.
Some predictions:
- the number of people creating software will continue to explode.
- the amount of software (great, okay and bad) will grow accordingly, think 10,000x in a few years, but with similar ratios of each bucket as before.
- the business of software will change rapidly, in a similar fashion to content.
- lots more software will be free: as a funnel to something else, to build people's profiles, for the love of the game.
- people will still make plenty of money from directly monetising software, but it'll become increasingly important to (as @nikitabier) says, have one or more of these: network effects, proprietary data & physical components.
- I'd suggest tech commentators are underestimating the importance of brand/personality in this too. more influencers will run software companies.
- just having the greatest product/distribution/intensity will still matter though, whether you're monetising directly or not. the difference in output between a great person and good person is even wider post-AI than pre-AI.
- the number of people required to build useful software will keep shrinking. just like content creators are typically a single person, software products/companies will increasingly be a solopreneur or smaller team.
- the type of software that's built will drastically expand, as more people (and agents) participate and build for themselves and their people/ideas.
- finally, in the immortal words of @GRITCULT, things will get weirder.

Software doesn't have to look like an app.
We're celebrating software as a creative medium in SF (Oct 14) and NY (Oct 22). Come see and create 🎨

for mainstream consumer AI, i'm rather more bullish on vibe coded "media" than apps - motion graphics, movies, musically triggered visuals etc.
the type of trippy shit you might entertain yourself with at MOMA. things that stir up your emotion. things that make you feel things.
instagram's initial wedge was one tap filtered photos that made anyone feel like a professional photographer.

Went to "Software As Content" by the @getdiffer team and now I have a bunch of fun/weird little chorded musical toys: player.getdiffer.com/@ade as well as the feeling that we're not post-literacy but emerging into a world of new literacies and software may become media.

UI isn't going away, my dudes.
Complexity shifts, not dissipates, and any new centres of complexity will need new interfaces.
Like, try parking a car with text.

The latest episode of A New Computer is out! This week @rupertmanfredi and I speak with @NoamTenne and @iristenteije of Sky Valley (@getdiffer) about the concept of "adaptive software" and what it means for the future of personal computing. youtube.com/watch?v=K47fTisb…

The question we get most about @getdiffer is "what does adaptive software actually look like?"
This is Cove, our internal chat app, and we each have a different version of it.
We've been experimenting with a "universe" picker. I can use a switch that drops me into @iristenteije's universe. It's still my user, but it's her divergence. I can see what she sees, then hop back to mine.

What would your software look like if it adapted to each user?
Differ proposes real adapted versions of your app, before you deploy anything with us.

Maybe you want a port of @pidotdev in @golang - the guys from @getdiffer (Sky Valley Ambient Computing) @NoamTenne and @iristenteije have done the work.

Ramp’s @eglyman says most B2B SaaS is awful for one reason:
Every user wants something different from the same product.
But he’s bullish that generative interfaces can tailor tools to the unique needs of each user, from the AP clerk to the accountant to the CFO.

62k signals. 272 suggestions. 80 errors, 58 already fixed.
Static software logs all this and waits for someone to schedule a sprint.
Here it's the input for the app to self-improve.

I'm building a sales assistant bot and wanted to infuse the gold that is @20vcFund Sales episodes, but the transcripts out there are rough (sorry Harry, the machines are doing you wrong).
So I built a transcription pipeline with five engines to vote on every word, identify every speaker so I always know who said what, and spell words correctly so no more Peter Teal.
Since I built it anyway, I've decided to publish everything transcribed so far for free: 996.fm
