Start by learning the basics of AI, how the systems work, and where they`re being used. From there, explore different career paths before committing to one.
If AI governance interests you, I`d focus on NIST AI RMF, risk assessments, and understanding the AI lifecycle. You can also start building practical projects to show what you`ve learned.

Move abroad!
If I were transitioning into AI Governance today, I`d learn:
NIST AI RMF
ISO/IEC 42001
AI system lifecycle
AI risk assessments
AI use case inventories
Third-party AI risk
AI impact assessments
Governance controls & evidence
Then I`d build a portfolio demonstrating my ability to apply these skills.
