My take on : Task simplification & manipulating constraints,in this case (equipment) in beginners tennis. Tennis has traditionally treated newcomers to the game as if they're incapable of PLAYING tennis until all the technical "fundamentals" are in place. I was guilty of this 🤦🏽♂️.
Manchester United under "Interm" managers play free flowing, creative, dynamic football & when that manager becomes "fulltime"
Mechanist, confirming, fearful football. The mentality shift is so obvious & frustrating to see the same pattern emerge time and again .
Before you fix technique, ask what it is solving.
This 2½-min case follows a serve that reorganised after repeated double faults.
The new action helped the player start the point, but cost speed, spin, placement and variety.
We started by asking why.
I’m incredibly grateful that you took time out of your own day to challenge my thinking, question my assumptions and give me the critical feedback I needed.
That feedback has made the case better. More importantly, it has made me a better coach.
Thank you.
If anyone wants to read the full case study including the context, GOAT framework, intervention rationale, competitive follow-up, limitations and what I’d measure next send me a message and I’ll happily share it.

Chances to do something in your environment: the landscape of affordances depends on the one perceiving it at that time in that place .
To the "its all about getting the repetitions in" folks out there. So why not gets reps that look like the game in !!!
Most tennis tests operate in a vacuum!! So I developed the S.E.T. Protocol — Skill Effectiveness Test in an attempt to add game context.
Its defining feature is that the assessment is embedded within a game.
The player knows the objective of the game.
They do not know they are completing a formal test.
The infographic explains what is being assessed and how the results can inform coaching.
The video shows what the protocol looks like in practice.
The score is not the endpoint.
