Life is crazy.
HOW I BOOKED A MEETING WITH A CEO OF A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY
Two months ago, I was a freelance marketer bored out of my mind in Web2.
I was living on a farm in the middle of nowhere in New Zealand, rearing calves part time.
Yesterday, I sat down for lunch with a billionaire CEO who received investments from @richardbranson, @reidhoffman, Facebook, and Coke.
How the f**k did this happen?
On day 3 of @consensus2024, I sat in the Google Cloud Startup Village, absorbing a masterclass on startup growth strategies. The Aussie Queen of guerrilla marketing, Grace Wong, shared how she grew @livenpay into a multi-billion dollar company.
I was hooked. I scribbled notes furiously, trying to engrave her wisdom into my brain.
When the interview finished, I took a leaf from the @tferriss playbook and forced myself to get up and ask a question. Terrified, I stood up in front of investors, founders, billionaires, and my idols in this space.
But I didn't second-guess my motivation. Something deeper compelled me to rise and wait for a microphone.
With shaking hands and sweat dripping from my back to my crack, I asked a question.
I had zero expectationsโI just wanted to put myself out there and understand more about building a valuable ecosystem around a token.
Not only did @graceliven88 give unbelievable insights, she also said:
"Come chat with me to learn about adding more utility to your token."
The moment the masterclass ended, I ran up to Grace before she was mobbed by 10 more crypto bros like me.
Surprisingly, Grace took the time to ask about @nodepay_ai and what I do for them. We spoke about sneaky marketing tactics, DePIN, and token utility.
As she was about to leave backstage, I took another shot.
"Could I please grab your WhatsApp, Grace?"
To my disbelief, she pulled out her phone, showed me the QR code, and told me to add her. We snapped a pic together and I walked away beaming, grateful for the wisdom she had shared.
Later that night, I lay in bed reliving the moment.
Another thought popped into my head...
So, I grabbed my phone and let one more shot fly - a hail mary.
"Hey Grace, Itโs Ben from Nodepay. Thank you so much for answering my questions and offering the amazing advice. Are you still in Austin tomorrow? Our team would love to set a quick meeting before you leave."
My phone buzzed back.
"Hey Ben, yes actually I am here tomorrow, we can do that :)"
Fuck.
Touchdown.
The next day, Grace & her business partner met us at the Austin Hilton. They took time out of their busy schedules to discuss token utility, scaling up, and how to merge Web2 and Web3 customers with Earl, @PrinceDerrickSG, and the @nodepay_ai team.
Lesson? If you want to know something - ask the damn question.
You never know who youโll end up having lunch with.
Scared? Ask yourself if you could live with yourself if you walked away right now...
I wouldnโt have been able to. The nagging 'What if?' thoughts would have plagued my mind for weeks.
I am eternally grateful to Grace for taking the time to share her wisdom and offer advice I wouldโve paid thousands of dollars for. And I just wanna make a shoutout to the Nodepay team for taking a shot on a 27-year-old Kiwi and selecting him as Head of Marketing for this campaign.
Itโs been a helluva ride so far, and we ainโt done yet.
I will leave you with a word of advice from Grace...
"Be curious & tenacious: nobody is going to just give you what you want in this world. You need to be strong enough to reach out and grasp it, and then, hold on!"
Lil life update.
Surreal moment for @PrinceDerrickSG and I.
Over the last two months, we (not so) quietly built out a community of 100k+ nodes.
And yesterday we had the pleasure of being one of 12 startups invited to the @Google cloud startup village @consensus2024
This has been an amazing opportunity to network and meet some of Web3s best builders, devs, and thought leaders.
If Iโm dreaming, donโt pinch me bros.
L.I.V.I.N
A little mindblown. We quietly built a little community on X and Discord over the past month.
72 hours after launching the platform ๐๐ผ
Lessa is (not so quietly) building the best damn account on X.
This time last year she was under <500 followers.
Now she's knocking on the door of 5K, and may be the only growth guru I'd ever follow.
Lessa's about to drop her masterclass...

September 11th
I will remember this day forever
This is the day when everything changed...
---
For the last 7 months I was living in the dormitory
No privacy whatsoever
Roommate screaming in dota
Drunk assh*les partying all the time
A couple keeps breaking up every single night
Roommate changing his clothes while I'm on a sales call..
It was a hell of a life
I was exhausted to death
I couldn't sleep
I couldn't stay alone
I couldn't hop on calls
I couldn't live in peace
At all...
(if anyone tells you dormitory is fun - fuck them)
---
I had a mission
Make enough money to move out
I am hoping โฌ2,000-3,000/mo for at least 5-6 months straight should do the trick
But it feels so unreal
I am making โฌ150/mo, how will I get to that level?
No idea...
I know I will get there
I just have to figure this out
Maybe in a year or so I will move out
[It was April, 2023]
---
I know I need to start working in order to get there
So I decide to focus on these 3 things:
1) Build a brand on Twitter
2) Get as good in video editing as possible
3) Get as much work as I can
Everyday I'd wake up, sit down at my desk and turn on my Asus Zenbook 13
โข Editing videos
โข Writing content
โข Learning new stuff
I knew what I wanted, but I still wasn't getting much results
Yes, Twitter (X) is growing decently
Yes, my skills were getting better each time
And I even had a client I was working with
But it wasn't even close what I wanted
โฌ150/mo..
Are you kidding me?
---
The end of May
I am losing hope
โข I'd worked for free
โข I kept writing threads
โข My laptop is fucking around
I know I can't give up
This would mean I will give up on my dreams
So I go on Upwork, just to see if I can get any work there
I remember applying to 5-6 jobs proposals I was really interested in
2 of the most exciting ones replied...
I ended up working with one of them, because I simply had no time to handle the second one anymore
It all happened really fast. 2 people reached out to me on Twitter
We ended up working with them too
I am editing a trial for the guy from UpWork as well as for those 2 people from Twitter
It's a bit stressful
"Will I get this done in time?", I think
But it's also really exciting
"If it goes this way I might even make enough money to get a new โฌ2,000 laptop", goes through my mind
That trial ended up getting me that client
In his loom review he literally told me:
"Dude you're the best, you gotta work with me"
The best feeling ever
I am super proud of my edit
"It's probably one of my best so far"
"Let's post it on Twitter", I think
So I do...
It ends up blowing up
My DMs are filled with inbound leads
People book calls with me
I am overwhelmed
"I don't have time for all of this"
"For real, what the hell, why everything happens so fast?"
"How many clients should I say yes to? I don't want to promise something I can't deliver"
But it doesn't matter
I am getting a shit ton of work
This means a shit ton(for me) of money
---
In June I ended up making around โฌ2,500
It was more money than I used to dream of
I have just enough to get a brand new MacBook M2 pro 16 inch I was dreaming about
I am waiting for the final payment from one of the clients
Wake up really early and go and buy myself a MacBook
I have โฌ4 left on my bank account, but it doesn't matter
I know I will make much more money with this MacBook so this investment was worth every single penny
And it was just about time when my biggest client so far reached out to me
We ended up working together, which sky-rocketed my revenue
Why did they reach out to me?
Because I was building my brand on X
They have seen my expertise and they knew I know my stuff
Important note here
It was not enough to just talk about it
I had to make a trial to prove that I actually have skills
And I did, they ended up really happy with it, so my skills is what made us work together in the end

September 2023
I am entirely sick of the dormitory
I want to move out so badly
So I decide to make an impulsive decision
I will rent my own apartment
I know I wouldn't have much money left
I know it's risky as fuck
If any of my clients leave - my revenue goes down big time
I was really scared of that
But I couldn't stand the dormitory anymore
It was disgusting to live there
So a few days later, I find an apartment and move in
I still can't believe I did that, but I am sure as hell happy I did
---
My main lessons that helped me do it:
1) Post your work online
First and the most important
Most of the money I made came from X
People saw I knew my stuff so they wanted to work with me
2) Keep improving your skills
I tried to get better with every video
Learned new editing techniques,
Tried some new effects
And just kept learning
It's what helped me charge more
3) Trust the process
This shit is hard
I know it
My first 6 months were really boring
Almost no results and only โฌ500 made
But it finally took off after 6 months of work
So don't give up after a few months of not seeing results
It will come if you stay in the game for long enough
This is it for today
Peace
No one remembers your shit tweets.
No one remembers your viral tweets.
But they do remember if you show up.
As Dory says: Just keep tweetin'.
Imagine paying $599 for an ๐ coach and all they tell you to do is run a free giveaway every week.
yo @elonmusk why can't i schedule long form bro?
sincerely, all ๐ users.
Ultimate productivity hack:
- Wake up
- Do all priority tasks by 12pm.
- Do whatever TF you want for the rest of the day.
Thatโs it.
You always have more work to do.
But.
You can't do it all right NOW.
Cut yourself some slack.
You are doing enough.
