For the first day of #BlackHistoryMonth I’d like to share a glamorous mugshot of my grandmother, a freedom rider.
On September 11, 2001, FDNY members from Ladder Company 6 were helping Josephine Harris down Stairwell B in the North Tower when the building collapsed around them. Trapped beneath the rubble for hours, Josephine, six firefighters and a Port Authority police officer survived.
What began as a rescue that day became a lifelong bond. Josephine remained close with the members of Ladder 6 until she died in 2011. The same firefighters carried her one last time as pallbearers at her funeral.
On Tuesday, Josephine's family returned the green firehouse jacket she was given from Ladder 6 members following 9/11. Four of the six members who helped rescue Josephine 25 years ago were there to accept the jacket.
Now, it will remain as a permanent reminder of a life saved, a bond shared, and the promise to Never Forget.

For too long, Area Median Income (AMI) has failed working families in communities like Crown Heights.
It's time for New York City to move from AMI to Community Median Income (CMI), so affordable housing is based on the realities of our neighborhoods, not regional averages that leave too many families behind.

You can’t be on food stamps if they no longer exist.

This is one of my favorite details from the halftime show: the ribbed knit top worn while waving Haiti’s flag was basically a quiet conversation with history.
It echoes photographer Jay Maisel’s Haiti, 1973 series, specifically the picture "Haiti No. 59".
Maisel once said those images came from “a nostalgic view of better times,” and somehow that nostalgia found its way onto one of the biggest stage in the world.
From a street corner in 1973 and a fresko cart to a global halftime show decades later, same colors, same soul, "same" Haiti.
Fashion as memory. Culture as continuity. 🇭🇹✨
Thank you for this ❤️ @_dilemmer

For families trying to make ends meet, these costs add up fast. New Yorkers shouldn’t be paying the highest auto insurance rates because of fraud and runaway lawsuits. It’s time to put the brakes on this and bring real relief to drivers.

High-impact tutoring works. It helps students catch up, build confidence, and succeed in the classroom. Grateful to the @GovKathyHochul for including my High-Impact Tutoring bill in her State of the State and for making student success a top priority across New York.

As a parent, I’m thinking about the long term. Big, bold investments in clean, reliable energy like nuclear help secure the future our kids deserve.
