Last night, I delivered my maiden speech @RBKC. I spoke about how the council’s new Community Safety Plan must tackle the inequality that drives the higher crime rates in North Kensington. A fairer borough is one in which residents feel safe in all parts.

I’m proud to ‘Wear it Pink’ and support Breast Cancer Now this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 💗 As the former minister who wrote the National Cancer Plan earlier this year, and as a metastatic breast cancer patient, this campaign is really important to me. (1/3)

Some chatter on social media would have you believe that crime is out of control. The facts tell a different story. As @frasernelson has shown in his Substack today: Violence is at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981. Robbery is at a record low. Crime, excluding fraud, is 78% down on its peak in 1995. And the stats show this Government is delivering on its promises too: Knife crime is down 11%. Knife murders are at their lowest level in 35 years. Thefts including phone snatching have fallen by 20% in the last year alone. But I know there is more that we must do, and we will: We’ve put more than 3,800 extra neighbourhood officers into roles, with named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood. We’re introducing the most significant reforms to policing in a generation. We are tackling rising rates of violence against women and girls through our landmark strategy. And we are tackling crimes like fraud, more prevalent in our increasingly online world, with £250 million directed to this challenge in our Fraud Strategy published this year.

Pensioner poverty has halved in the past 30 years, as the shadow work and pensions secretary @Helen_Whately claimed. But how much of this was down to the Conservatives? Almost all the fall she’s talking about happened under Labour. fullfact.org/economy/helen-w…

The vast majority of criticism was not because she is Muslim, but because she was not following very basic gun safety rules. A certain Rachel asked Nobel laureate Paul Krugman a question at Oxford last night, casually noting the IMF’s praise for UK deficit and debt reduction and the productivity puzzle being revised away. All during her time as Chancellor, as it happens. Laughter and applause.

Rachel Reeves suffered misogyny and calls of being the worst chancellor from the public and well know ‘economists’. Yet she consistently placed Britain on the surest path to success. She was excellent and should still be in post.
“The UK is actually one country where action to reduce debt and deficit has been taken decisively and we see the UK in that sense enjoying a bit of a better growth prospect”. IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva just again singled out UK for its plans to reduce annual borrowing, amid more general warnings that advanced economies should “get house in order”, after the forecast figures released yesterday. Also said growth is not enough for US to reduce rising borrowing…

The thing is... Keir and Rachel DID fix the foundations. On growth, NHS, immigration, poverty, public services - they reversed the momentum, turned us around, and now we are moving in the right direction. Hard yards need hard decisions and they did that
Fastest rate of UK economic growth for almost four years at 2.1% YoY and a sprightly 0.7% QoQ to the end of August. Construction still firmly in the doldrums (-1.8% YoY) but services, manufacturing, investment & trade all showing decent Q3 momentum.

Anyone who has been around Brixton station of late will be aware that the area is covered in litter. Bins are overflowing, there is a severe homelessness issue and it's crackhead/anti-social behaviour galore. So, shall we check in on what Lambeth Council will be spending time discussing at its meeting this evening? Well! Tonight Lambeth Council, led by a Green-Lib Dem coalition is due to discuss Motion 3 (Green Group): Palestine – End the Genocide, Complicity and Impunity. "This motion condemns Israel's actions in Gaza, calls for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages. It also calls on the UK Government to halt arms exports, impose economic sanctions, and provide evidence to the International Criminal Court. It further proposes that the Council review its contracts and investments to divest from companies complicit in violations of international law." Note they haven't even been bothered to update the language still referencing hostages... This is Lambeth Council's priority while some of the worst crime and antisocial behaviour in London is happening as we speak within its boundaries.

Are we all going to have to reassess the Rachel Reeves narrative…
The UK economy has proved remarkably resilient in the face of Trump’s war on Iran and Labour Budget own goals. GDP increased by only 0.1 per cent in August, down from a 0.4 per cent rise in July. But June growth revised up to 0.4 per cent from 0.3 per cent previously. In the quarter to August, GDP rose by 0.7 per cent. In the first half of this year, the UK was the fastest growing economy in the G7 group of rich countries. So far, so good. The fear now is that August is a harbinger of worse to come.

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry was clear about the failings of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and senior individuals involved in the management of their housing, including the Tower. It’s totally inappropriate for any individual criticised by the Inquiry to continue to work in housing, particularly while criminal investigations are ongoing. It’s right that Laura Johnson is no longer in such a position. You can read more here: theguardian.com/uk-news/2026…
