Of the 30 hottest days ever recorded, no fewer than 21 have occurred THIS MONTH. Temperatures in July 2023 could well be the highest for 120,000 years. This story is the lead on the BBC website, 7th on The Times, 69th on The Daily Mail, & hasn’t yet been mentioned by The Sun.

Tears in my eyes as I listen to the last broadcast by @BBCArabic, closing down after 85 years. It meant so much to so many people here over the decades. Now the airwaves are dead. End of an era.

Cabinet ministers sacking permanent secretaries on their 1st day in office is unwise & unconstitutional but the government has discovered it can do what it wants with the civil service, which has no power to resist. The retired complain, but so what? Parliament needs to act.

Over the past years @UKCivilService has been attacked and maligned by certain government ministers. Over the past 24 hours they have literally held the administration of our country together & are currently sorting out this mess. Thank you.

Thinking of #learning #Arabic on #WorldArabicLanguageDay? Here are 2 books to really inspire you! @zora's 'All Stragers are Kin' (AUCPress, 2018) and @jacobhalpin's 'Thirteen Ways to Make a Plural' (AUC Press, 2020)
Well said. I’d add that the pace & pressure of crisis work means it is inevitably messy and imperfect. Scrutiny is important and there will always be lessons to learn, but this reality needs to be recognised - as well as the impact of long-term understaffing on crisis response.
Personal plea. A bad news day for the FCDO. I won’t pass judgement on the whistleblowing affair. People can form their own view. I would at least hope those thinking harshly of my colleagues keep in mind that we have basically been in crisis response mode since 2016…
