Dr. Hillary’s performance was that of a teenage bull that was confirming to all doubters, if any, that he has arrived, he is him, and he is firmly at the table of kings. An African proverb says, “If a child washes his hands clean, he will eat with the kings.” Dr. Hillary Okello is at the table. His performance showed why he has been the hottest standup comedian in East African for the last two years. He was sharp, he was brilliant, he was sweet to watch. Then the man from Ombokolo, Salvado. First of all you have to appreciate the graciousness of taking on a man who calls him one of his mentors. Then after that, stand up and salute a legend, a towering figure, a living monument of Ugandan comedy, without whose sacrifices Ugandan comedy might have been two steps back from where it is now. When he got on stage, the energy in the room raised. Then he unleashed an absolute tsunami of a performance, that had adults laughing at the silliest things and laughing at themselves. He simply affirmed that a king is a king and a king never goes away. Hats off. The show might have been different if @CotildaComedy and @okellokelo didn’t start off they way they did. These two could have as well been the main act. That was how good they performed. They had people on the floor and in tears; tears of laughter. Finally, yesterday showed the power that comedy has in this country. For 100k, Serena filled up to capacity. No musician to pull crowds, just pure comedy. 2 Kings 1 Mic; history made.
