Let’s put an end to this irrelevant nonsense from you. In the UK’s four last years as an EU member (2017–2020) it received roughly 26,500–35,700 main asylum applications per year (higher if counting dependants). Eurodac foreign hits (indicating a prior asylum application in another Dublin country) numbered roughly 7,000–13,000 a year in 2017–2019, and higher in 2020. So a substantial minority — commonly in the region of 25–40% of applications in those years — had a prior registered claim elsewhere. Of that big minority who had previously applied elsewhere the VAST majority were NOT returned under the Dublin rules. Actual transfers out of the UK were only a few hundred people per year on average (for example, around 200 in 2018). In several of the later years the UK was a NET IMPORTER under Dublin, receiving more transfers in than it sent out. In other words, though the system identified many of those people who had already claimed elsewhere, only a very small fraction of them were ever transferred back. Most of them either stayed in the UK for processing or simply remained without a successful transfer back. In other words, Dublin had almost zero impact on asylum seeking in the UK when we were in the EU. Now, please go away and don’t bother me again with irrelevant bollocks.
No, that was the reality of Dublin, one application allowed across all member states... #Brexit took the UK out of that, so now they can, and do, apply in both...

I wonder why the BBC keeps promoting the Labour Government's wish to rejoin the EU, when it knows it makes no economic sense whatsoever. Also the cost of rejoining in the current would be prohibitive! Surely a mature and grown up relationship should suffice?

This Cabinet is a Cabinet of people who have never had jobs. They do not understand the impact of their actions on small businesses and entrepreneurs. We need a leader who has lived it, felt the pain of every energy price hike and has a plan to improve. Not a sticker on Google Maps. We need to do better, this is not acceptable leadership.
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.

How to discourage inward investment. The UK government deserves a gold star for their unparalleled financial illiteracy in this area. Fortune magazine is not some flakey right wing headbanging journal, it’s a serious business publication. apple.news/A937EOhytRaydOYkF…

This is economic illiteracy of a high order. After separation Scotland would still use sterling. So it would have to borrow in £s to cover its massive budget deficit and promise lenders it would pay back in £s (or they won’t lend). But after an unspecified transition it would move to a Scottish currency. But all the borrowing done during the transition would have to be paid back in sterling. If the Scottish currency plummeted v sterling (likely given the size of the deficit, lack of credit track record etc) that could become an unmanageable burden given the likely poor exchange rate. Scotland would have to borrow billions in its own currency just to convert to sterling to pay back lenders. Devaluing the Scottish currency further. What a shambles that would be. He has no idea what he’s talking about.
Swinney says an "independent" Scotland would convert to a Scots currency 🤣🤡

To all my followers - while I'll continue with my @Telegraph columns each week, the Planet Normal podcast and my "When The Facts Change" Substack, the @CPSThinkTank is my new day job. Please watch this video and like/share the post below to help me spread the word. Thanks, Liam
Fifty years ago, Britain was in crisis. The music was good, but the economy was a mess. We were forced to go to the International Monetary Fund for a deeply-damaging bailout. The UK needed a new direction - that's why Margaret Thatcher and Keith Joseph founded the Centre for Policy Studies. A full half century on, our new Director, the economist and journalist @LiamHalligan, is arguing for another policy revolution now: lower taxes, cheaper energy, affordable welfare, an economy that rewards work and enterprise. Britain’s problems are urgent – we're on the brink of another bailout. But we changed course fifty years ago - and with the right ideas, we can do so again. The Centre for Policy Studies - where the fightback begins.

There’s not much to be said for almost 30 years of devolution but it has allowed for a massive real-time experiment in school systems. Starting with Thatcher, continued by Major, Blair and Brown, given huge boost under Cameron-Gove-Gibb, English schools saw major reforms — academies, free schools etc. Scottish schools stayed totally comprehensive under the dead hand of socialism/nationalism. No variety in state system. But lots more money. Ditto Welsh schools. Results are in and they couldn’t be clearer — English state schools have powered ahead, Scottish and Welsh schools have fallen back into mediocrity or worse. Scottish/Welsh pols too blinkered to learn the lessons so more decline beckons. What is unforgivable is that the current Labour government under two appalling education secretaries — Lucy Powell and Bridget Phillipson — want to roll back all the progress that’s been made in England to appease the hard-left teaching unions and the left-wing Blob.
Breaking. PISA results for 2025 show Scottish pupils are more than a year behind their English peers for maths and science. Also behind on reading. (20 points is equivalent of a year of schooling) 1/4

Nitrogen dioxide levels are down in every city in the UK due to cleaner cars, regardless whether the cities impose congestion charges. Khan has long struggled to prove that ULEZ has made the difference he clams.
Three years on from the ULEZ expansion, the evidence is clear: cleaner air, healthier children, fewer lives cut short.

Europe continues to skimp on defence spending while allowing welfare states to get more bloated. The cumulative underspend since 2010 alone is close to $8 trillion. Why should American taxpayers fund European benefits? On this, Trump is dead right thetimes.com/comment/columni…

The existential crisis of the Western car industry will be one of the defining economic stories of the next decade.👇 It will be grisly and difficult, and a tough time to be a free trader. It will be even tougher than the last "China shock" which began to hollow out industrial regions in Europe and America - because this is much more skilled labour, much higher-paid jobs, that are being disrupted. But it also speaks to something else, a decades-long story of how American and European firms quietly outsourced much of their manufacturing expertise to Asia. The car badges stayed as European and American as they always were. But their insides were, more and more, coming from the other side of the world. What we are living through now is the next act of that saga, as cheap (and good!) Chinese cars flood the rest of the world. But to understand this moment, you need to step back and look not at cars but at the evolution of "globalisation", to look at how, over time, our fixation with cheap stuff has invariably trumped the question of where stuff comes from. That is the story I've tried to tell in Trade World - to try to illustrate the arcs of economic history that led us to this moment, and to ponder what comes next...
