After a June visit to Chapel Hill (in which I was lucky enough to visit Pod World Headquarters) and recent announcement that 100% Club members get extra Poddy votes, I’m on a mission to join the 100% Club myself. Welcome to a 🧵 @carolina_pod @JonesAngell @jadamlucas
Bob Costas was 18 when his father dropped dead at JFK airport. At the wake, a man handed him a thick envelope with $6,000 in $100 bills. It was everything his father left behind, and a bookie would never have paid it to a dead man.
In the video below, he tells the story himself.
His father, John, was a big-time gambler. Not casinos, not racetracks. Ball games. Bob says the mortgage was literally riding on his bets.
When the games went the wrong way, he threw things, cursed and yelled. Bob’s mom and sister would leave. Bob stayed, because watching the games with his dad was the only way to be close to him.
Friday, May 15, 1970. A cop knocks on the door. Before he says a word, Bob’s mother asks, “My husband’s dead, isn’t he?” John Costas had a heart attack walking through JFK. He was 42.
At the wake, one of his gambling buddies walked in with the envelope. “Your father was up when he died. Give this to your mother.” A bookie never pays a dead man, so the friend went to the bookie himself and said John sent him to collect.
Decades later, Bob Costas refused to read sports betting ads on air. Today the bookie lives in everyone’s phone. Is that progress?

It’s no secret that I have a low opinion of gambling but the evidence is on my side. It’s not just a tax on the mathematically challenged, combined with our phones and the addictive nature of social media it’s downright dangerous.
Now comes Nicole Noreen, a prize winning journalist who left ESPN over its embrace of gambling. Her interview is worth reading. Link to it in the first comment.

Parasitoid wasps inject eggs into a caterpillar. The larvae hatch, eat the host’s insides, and hijack its brain to make it do their bidding. Still looks like a caterpillar from the outside, but it now exists to serve the parasite. This is what online gambling has done to sports.
Here's an idea for @NewmarkUNC to keep in his back pocket when decisions are made about the Smith Center.
I'm sorry that this story was online for a few days and I did not see it immediately. That's my bad.

New column: The #MontrossDayOfService is intended to honor the service legacy of one of Carolina's best. And a day spent contributing to the community was a reminder that his impact continues far beyond the basketball court.
