This is a point I will come back to over and over and over and over again. ‘FAIRNESS’ is an integral British value. People don’t see left wing or right wing on most stuff - they see fairness or lack thereof. Any scheme that caters to a minority group is inherently unfair, even if well meaning in principle. It also creates a perverse incentive for others to try and ‘get in’ to that bucket while diluting the help available to those who need it. Britain is a society growing sick thanks to a perverse political understanding of fairness, aided by a swollen NGO/TikTok ‘here’s how you do it’ sector.
‘Our bill is going to get to half a trillion because someone can’t remember to book a train in advance?’ @TomSwarbrick1 can’t believe caller Gavin is defending cheaper train tickets for people with ADHD.

After years of being petitioned, I finally let the cameras in. The mortifying ordeal of being known, etc etc
'The Martin Lewis Budget has arrived. Pitiful bungs on energy bills and household goods, all while making the underlying problems we face even worse. I’m almost surprised John Healey didn’t advise us to switch our current accounts for the £100 bonus.' The closer you look, the worse it gets... I've dissected yesterday's Budget in a special edition of The @Telegraph Investor Newsletter. You can find my full analysis here, and sign up for the Investor Newsletter if you haven't already: telegraph.co.uk/newsletters/…

I find it fascinating that the Government can include a forecast based on historical evidence (green), which shows completions will continue to fall, and just say 'nah, I'm pretty certain they'll rise'

Incredible line in the update to the Lifetime Isa rules, clarifying that HMRC is not currently capable of reclaiming the penalty

I hope not, I rather like the home I rent
Has John Healey driven what could be the final nail into the coffin of the buy-to-let market by increasing tax on rental income from 2027? This will disincentivise people from speculating on buy-to-let. Now harder for landlords to pass on costs to renters because of the Renters' Rights Act tribunal.

The Martin Lewis Budget is here. Pitiful bungs while the underlying problems worsen. £100 if your house was cheap in 1991, but the tax burden will hit a new post-war high every year. A can-kicking Budget with all the big decisions deferred @Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

After the vague message in the Budget, up to 49pc rate on landlords and savers confirmed. That's an additional 4percentage points from where it stands today

Same as it ever was
Borrowing still coming down this year. But the fiscal consolidation pushed back again. Government still planning a sharp fall in borrowing in next few years.

While there have been fewer leaks than in recent years, one tradition is certain to be continued by John Healey tomorrow – kicking the can down the road. (And I doubt anyone is going to be convinced by his defence borrowing 'trick') @Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/newsletters/…

Replying to @jamesbaxterd
@jamesbaxterd discusses why he thinks the Chancellor’s promise of “breathing room” in next week’s Budget may not amount to much relief for taxpayers. 'From £2 bus fares to zero VAT on electricity bills, the promises may sound good on paper. But will they make a meaningful difference to household finances when bigger bills and tax rises could already be on the horizon?'👇 telegraph.co.uk/money/tax/ne…
