Waymo vehicles have a 13x lower rate of serious accidents than human drivers. Six generations of hardware. Thousands of innovations in AI and software. 170M+ fully autonomous miles.
For 20 years @Dmitri_Dolgov has been focused on making driving safer. While dozens of companies have come and gone, Dmitri persisted.
He knows that getting to "good" is easy, getting to "great" is hard and getting to "super human safety" is extreme. Dmitri chooses extreme.
My favorite part about him? He’s extremely humble about all this and remains focused on what's next: scaling.
We're grateful to have hosted Dmitri and his @Waymo team at @sequoia AI Ascent last week. Full video here:

The story of Harvey is absolutely fricking wild.
Two friends, a lawyer and an engineer realise the power of OpenAI and legal and cold email Sam Altman and co.
They have calls which lead to OpenAI leading their Seed Round as the sole investor. (baller)
Sequoia (@gradypb), @eladgil @saranormous go on to lead their Series A.
The company today does:
- $190M in ARR
- 500+ employees

Over the last few days, there’s been a lot of discussion in Compliance Land about audit quality and what “trust” really means in practice. I want to be clear: Vanta is not involved in these practices or associated with the firms in question.
The behaviors discussed represent a fundamental misunderstanding of what we are all here to do. Trust isn't a badge to buy; it's a standard to maintain.
When we started Vanta in 2018, the goal was simple: help startups earn trust early so they could compete for larger customers.
At the time, a SOC 2 report was often treated as the finish line. If you had the report, the conversation moved on.
That’s no longer how trust works; nor should it work that way.
A SOC 2 report is a snapshot. Snapshots only matter if they’re accurate, independently verified, and grounded in how systems actually work, and even then, they're just snapshots.
At Vanta, we’ve always believed that security and compliance should be two sides of the same coin. You shouldn’t “check the box” one way and secure your systems another. You should secure them and then let software prove that continuously.
That belief shapes how we think about audit integrity.
We don't issue reports. Independent auditors do. Today, tens of thousands of audits have been completed using Vanta. We maintain a network of more than 100 vetted, independent audit firms around the world that conduct audits using Vanta, and all of the auditors we introduce to our customers are AICPA peer reviewed, which is a baseline requirement for audit quality and independence. Independence and rigor really matter here.
Automation should make audits faster, but the goal is better audits, not just faster ones.
At the same time, the answer to audit cheat codes isn’t going backward to slower, more manual processes. The real improvement comes from knowing, day to day, whether your controls are actually working, instead of finding out months later during an audit.
SOC 2 still matters. It’s just not the whole story.
If you’re building or buying software today, trust increasingly comes from how well your controls hold up over time *and* from who’s actually validating them.

the company is only a few months in and already...
- delivering real value through Specific Intelligence at companies like doordash, mercor and cognition
- in a *wildly* competitive talent market, team is stacked with @ypatil125, @rhythmrg, @lindensli, @michaelzchen5 and others
... just a few of the reasons we're delighted to be partners with @appliedcompute at @sequoia!
Generalists are useful, but it’s not enough to be smart.
Advances come from specialists, whether human or machine.
To have an edge, agents need specific expertise, within specific companies, built on models trained on specific data.
We call this Specific Intelligence.
It's what we're building at Applied Compute.
We unlock the latent knowledge inside a company, use it to train custom models, and deploy an in-house agent workforce that reports to your team.
We work with sophisticated companies that have already captured early gains from general models, like @cognition, @DoorDash, and @mercor. They’re pulling even further ahead with proprietary in-house agents that don’t need to wait for the next public model release.
Together, we are building and validating models and agents in days instead of months, achieving state-of-the-art performance on customer evals.
Our team has high density and low latency. Our founders all worked on different parts of this problem while they were researchers at OpenAI — @ypatil125 as a key member on the agentic software engineer effort (Codex), @rhythmrg as a core contributor to the first RL-trained reasoning model (o1), and @lindensli as a core contributor on ML systems and infrastructure for RL training.
Two-thirds of the team are former founders, and everyone brings a deep technical background, from top AI researchers to Math Olympiad winners.
We are backed by $80M in funding from Benchmark, Sequoia, Lux, Elad Gil, Victor Lazarte, Omri Casspi, and others. With their support, we are growing the team, scaling deployments, and bringing to market the first generation of agent workforces built on specific models.
In short:
1. We are building Specific Intelligence for specific work at specific companies.
2. That will power in-house agent workforces to support their human bosses.
3. That in turn will unlock AI’s full potential through humanity’s greatest engine of progress: thriving corporations in a free market.

foundation models build from the tech out

Lots of talk in our industry around this headline today….
1) What this is (and isn’t):
OpenAI is paying experts to create data to improve their AI models. No duh. This is not a new product announcement for a banker-specific chatbot. OpenAI/Anthropic/Gemini/XAI are all in the business of collecting vast amounts of knowledge work data (across finance, legal, healthcare, etc) to make their models smarter. This is what they’ve been doing for the past 5 years and it’s what they’ll continue to do for the next 5.
2) Why this is great for the finance ecosystem:
This means OAI cares about making sure their base models understand finance. Better AI models mean better application layer products. Rogo and other startups are built on top of OpenAI’s models. That means when they improve their AI, the floor rises for what we can do. The more OAI invests here, the more the whole ecosystem gains. Every bank, hedge fund, and investor will be able to build all sorts of tools on top of OpenAI’s API & every startup that cares about solving finance pain points gets a leg up.
3) Why smarter models are not enough:
Large language models are only as good as the context, tools, and data they have access to… Imagine if a human banking analyst couldn’t log into FactSet, or use PowerPoint or Pitchbook, or reference any internal XLSX/PPT precedents… they probably wouldn’t be very good. That’s why at Rogo, we connect AI to the workflows, data sources, internal systems, and outputs that bankers actually need. That means every time LLMs get smarter, we can take advantage of that ASAP to deliver more value, more outputs, and more results to our clients.
We're customer obsessed at Rogo. We eat, sleep and breathe AI for finance and finance only. There’s so much work to do to harness the raw intelligence of LLMs and make sure they deliver on the grandiose promise of changing finance (and make sure no more jnr bankers have to stay up until 4am moving around logos in software tools made in the 80s :))

A year ago we led @get_aspora Series A, and since then we doubled down by co-leading the B with our friends at @GreylockVC .
The company is growing very fast, the founder is a 20 something Physics Olympian who dropped out of Stanford, and they have one of the most intense startup cultures in Europe…lots of things to catch a VCs eye.
But more importantly, founder Parth Garg is on a relentless mission to build neobaking products for diasporas everywhere.
Today we welcome @ChadWestTweets as CMO of Aspora. After having spent 5 years at Revolut leading their marketing efforts, I can’t think of a better leader to join the company.
The best fintechs are built in London! ;)
