A reminder of how Mel Gibson took authenticity to another level with Apocalypto, going to extraordinary lengths to make the film feel as culturally and historically grounded as possible. Rather than relying on a conventional Hollywood cast, the production featured primarily Indigenous actors from Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, many of whom had little or no previous acting experience.
