"On Bullshit, And AI-Generated Prose" AI these days is writing confident, instant answers -- that can contain huge factual errors When humans do this? Bloviate, without knowing -- or *caring* -- if we're right? That's called "bullshitting"πŸ˜‚ My essay: clivethompson.medium.com/on-…

Some personal news! After spending 17 years in northern journalism, I’m off to try a new thing. On Monday I start work as a communications analyst for Yukon’s Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.

I count myself especially lucky for being able to help out Nunatsiaq News as an editor for the past 3.5 years. I started my reporting career in Nunavut and it’s been nice to reconnect with that part of the North.

I find myself in the strange position of being the last of the old guard at the newspaper. I wish the best of luck to the new gang – I think they’ll do great. And to our readers: koana, matna, qujannamiik, nakurmiik.

Nunatsiaq News is also looking to hire a reporter. It’s a great opportunity for someone getting started in journalism. We’d love to find a candidate based in Nunavut or Nunavik. #journojobs jeffgaulin.com/jobs/JobDetai…

Apply for my job! Nunatsiaq News needs a web editor. We need someone with strong editing and writing chops. Knowledge of the North would be a big plus – interest in the many big issues affecting the eastern Arctic is a requirement. Questions? Hit me up. jeffgaulin.com/jobs/JobDetai…

Yesterday I was too wrapped up editing stories about the death of Nunatsiaq News’ longtime editor, Jim Bell, to post anything personal. But I learned a ton from him over the years, and his passing is a big loss to northern journalism.

Here's a classic news story by Jim, when then-NTI president Paul Quassa was accused of (and later resigned over) having misspent the organization's founds. web.archive.org/web/20010221…

We repurposed this image for one of our stories on Jim's passing, so my thunder's a bit stolen, but here's Jim, Jane George and myself with Canada's Governor General and her husband back in 2007, when the newspaper was nominated for a Michener Award.

I wrote about my old friend @jameshenrybell an award-winning journalist who died yesterday an hour after I left his bedside. Hard to imagine a world unscrutinized by that old bastard. The bookkeepers in heaven best get their shit in order. nunatsiaq.com/stories/articl…
