When Teacher Salaries Fall Behind Inflation. A raise matters only if it keeps up with the cost of living. When salaries rise more slowly than prices, teachers lose purchasing power; when they rise faster, they gain it.
September’s figures show why that distinction matters. U.S. prices were up 3.7% from a year earlier, while average wages rose 3%. In practical terms, wages bought slightly less than they had the year before. These figures describe workers overall, not teachers specifically—but they highlight the pressure teachers face when salary increases fail to match rising costs.
Even a strong economy may not ease that pressure. Employment and consumer spending can remain solid, yet people judge economic conditions by what they experience in their own budgets: whether their income stretches as far as it used to. For teachers, that can mean a nominal raise that still leaves less room for housing, groceries, transportation, and other essentials.
For school districts and policymakers, keeping teacher compensation competitive means paying attention to purchasing power, not just the dollar amount of a raise. — @jcbowman
