Finland and Norway are testing Europe’s ability to react. Is this the first crack in the process of a split NATO, or an initiative that will further cement the coalition by peace through action?
Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine must be brought to an end. Everyone is suffering from its consequences, and no military solution is in sight. The outcome of the war will have a direct impact on the security of Finland and Norway and, more broadly, on the security of Europe as a whole. At this stage, peace will not be achieved by avoiding dialogue; ending the war requires direct discussions. This is in Finland’s interest. Today, together with Prime Minister of NorwayJonas Gahr Støre, we held a telephone conversation with President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The call was a follow-up to the meeting in Oslo on 20 October. It was prepared in consultation with Ukraine and the United States. We held the conversation in our capacity as leaders of our respective countries, not as representatives of Europe. It is important for Finland and Norway, as neighbouring countries of Russia, to engage in discussions with Russia based on our own perspectives and principles. We emphasized that our support for Ukraine remains unwavering. Our objective is to promote a just and lasting peace.

The Finnish colonization of Helsinki has been striking. The country must now reverse this as it integrates with NATO and the Nordics. Finland needs its Swedish-speakers more than ever, but it might already be too late.

A major Nordic defence event happened today that will probably go mostly unnoticed. The US is quietly building a special relationship within NATO, enabling technology and capital transfer to power a broader Arctic production strategy. nordicdefencesector.com/en/a…

Today, Finland celebrates its 108th year of independence. That’s exactly how long Finland was under Russian rule between 1809 and 1917. Still more than 500 years to go to surpass the period when the country was under Swedish rule.

The U.S. Declaration of Independence would probably not have been signed without a Finn. John Morton (Marttinen) provided the required swing vote for the Pennsylvania delegation and chaired the committee for the Articles of Confederation.

The European security landscape is shifting, but not in the way you may be thinking. There’s a development not widely understood that is set to materially affect the forming of European security, especially within technology. re-valence.com/insights/memo…

As the first Swedish-speaking president since Winter War icon C.G.E. Mannerheim, @alexstubb will lead Finland in taking an oversized role in NATO, especially in transatlantic relations and in modernising Nordic defense capabilities.

It looks increasingly likely that Finland will together with Sweden join @JFCNorfolk, creating a separate NATO enclave linking the Nordic region more directly with the U.S. and the AUKUS dimension for the High North
Thank you for the meeting @jensstoltenberg. Finland will be a reliable ally in NATO. We will do our part.

One year of NATO hasn't helped attract foreign investments into Finland. As one of the worst-performing equity indexes in the alliance, Finnish stocks have been marred by asset-heavy legacy industries and adjacent trade union strikes.

If this turns into a movie, it wouldn’t surprise me. Can already see the scene where @yarotrof sits in an empty Kyiv Hyatt, sipping Negronis with Sean Penn when the Russians start rolling in.
This just in from my former Bloomberg colleague and Pulitzer finalist. If this doesn’t win it for him, I don’t know what will. Get it.
