this is interesting: South Carolina passed a law in May banning minimum grades in K12 schools, to try and crack down on grade inflation..."among the first states to attempt to tackle the problem through legislation, following a similar law passed by Texas in 2009."

Kids aren't fish, and basic math and literacy aren't tree-climbing. Outstanding pushback from @ChadAldeman on New York’s Regents debate.

📚In 2024, Maryland set academic goals for students to reach by 2026 — by 2025 the goals had been lowered. Even with the revised benchmarks, students fell short in both English and math. 📉Now, some lawmakers say more accountability is needed as the state puts billions more into education funding.

Fantastic to see - this is mentioned as a pilot through mid-January and it looks like upcoming tutoring sessions are filled. I hope they monitor uptake AND outcomes and share with the community. Best wishes to the students and tutors!

First, they lowered cut scores. Then, they killed Regents exams. Now, New York is literally blocking AP test data. The war on objective benchmarks is complete.

Reading underpins all learning. That makes its continued decline one of the most concerning findings from the latest #OECDPISA. The ability to find, evaluate, interpret and reflect on information matters in an increasingly digital and #AI-driven world.

New PISA results are out. Here is what the NYT says: “The reading scores of American 15-year-olds have fallen sharply since 2022 and are near their lowest point in 25 years”

This confirms a pattern we have seen in NAEP as well: our top performers are holding their own while we have a growing number of students who are struggling to meet even a low bar of achievement.
The percentage of American 15 year olds who scored at the top level of PISA held relatively steady while the percentage scoring at the lowest level increased. In education we are becoming more unequal.

Update, no evidence of mercury in students blood steam 🤞🤞
It seems like there was a dimethal mercury incident on the MIT campus with one student directly exposed. A terrible tragedy and a terrible way to go.

21 years since Katrina. I was a third-year med student, dismissed from my psych rotation at Charity, went home, and packed a bag. When school reopened, we were scattered across the state. I stayed in Baton Rouge with friends and tried to figure out what came next. A month later, I drove back to New Orleans to gather my things. I’ll never forget that ride back into the city. New Orleans was changed forever.

Encouragingly, MIT’s own emergency alert website now indicates that the graduate student blood testing does not indicate mercury exposure. emergency.mit.net
