I put this series of essays into the world 1 year ago and I'm still quite proud of them.

The idea is that the foundation of a healthy society is healthy places. Places and their people can only be healthy when collaboratively managed over generations.
Big announcement time: I am proud to share a series of six essays about how new collaborative ‘technologies of affection’ can help us build more relational and resilient home places together.

Let’s talk about the $ZEC FUD. 🛡️
Zcash is everywhere on CT, but most people are confusing real challenges with a dying project.
Let’s look at the facts.
1. Governance & treasury: Yes, ZCG’s funding model deserves scrutiny. Sean Bowe challenged its automatic 8% allocation. ZCG then proposed redirecting ~98,000 ZEC toward future network security and reducing future grants. Not perfect, but this is a public debate about sustainability, not a protocol collapse.
2. ZECsy controversy: The $550K marketing proposal, including an adult-industry event, deserves scrutiny. Initial milestones of ~$461K were approved. Question the spending and demand measurable results. But controversial marketing isn’t a broken blockchain.
3. Orchard vulnerability: Serious? Absolutely. Fatal? No. Emergency remediation, NU6.3/Ironwood, a new corrected shielded pool and withdrawal controls for the old pool followed. No breach of the 21M supply cap has been demonstrated. Historical exploitation cannot be ruled out with certainty, but that isn’t proof of inflation.
4. Whale shorts: Around $228M in tracked Hyperliquid shorts versus $164M longs on Nov. 1. Real derivatives pressure, yes. Proof of spot selling or fundamental failure? No. Shorts can hedge other exposure.
5. Technology: NU7 targets Nov. 5: 25-second blocks instead of 75, higher planned shielded throughput and a Network Sustainability Mechanism. Gemini already uses the independent Zakura node. Coinholders voted 2.37M ZEC to preserve halvings versus 22K against.
6. Institutions: Grayscale’s ZCSH recorded ~$263M in net inflows through Q3. Cypherpunk held 326,417 ZEC at quarter-end. Euronext’s CoinShares ETP suspension was a settlement issue, not a Zcash ban.
Now the bigger picture.
Stablecoins, tokenisation and DeFi are moving finance on-chain. But completely transparent finance creates a massive problem: nobody wants every payment, position and financial relationship publicly exposed.
Financial privacy could become one of crypto’s next major narratives.
Zcash already has the technology: zero-knowledge proofs, shielded transactions, a 21M supply cap, halvings, growing shielded usage, institutional access and active development.
Bitcoin brought digital scarcity. Ethereum brought programmable finance. Zcash could help bring financial privacy to the next generation of on-chain markets.
Governance risks remain. Regulation, adoption and execution matter. Nothing guarantees price appreciation.
But dismissing ZEC because of controversies while ignoring its technology and growing financial relevance is missing the bigger picture.
I’m bullish because privacy may become a necessity, not a luxury, as finance moves on-chain.

Go zooko mode and give 0.1 zec to every barista in the world

I would argue bitcoin's distribution is incredibly bad and not something I'm even remotely trying to replicate
Bring back the bulletin board system (bbs), bright back physical relationship
Apparently I need to get myself to La Paz or Lhasa... surprised that Atlanta is comparable to the american west on my preferences
I made a tool where you can see where in the world has your favorite weather most often (it's the California coast).
You can also pick a given day of the year (like today, October 11), and see where on earth is most likely to have it.

For thirty years we've argued that software deserves First Amendment protection because software is speech. But the Constitution gives us another reason: software is a press.
The Free Press Clause protects not merely expressive outputs but the individual's freedom to possess and use technologies for producing and disseminating expression. The founding-era printing press is the paradigmatic example. That is the original understanding of the clause.
Software and open-weight generative models are modern instances of the same constitutional category. Regulation directed at their capacity to produce or disseminate expression and an Americans' right to own and control them directly implicates the Press Clause even when government characterizes the regulated object as a machine rather than speech.
The solution Wendell Berry offers is to grow your affection for the place and people around you - and really I think this is THE solution
I like information and will enthusiastically absorb lots of it but Wendell Berry was one of the only people who has written things that became a part of me instead of just being something to observe. He was really tapped into the essence of things, so really those things were already a part of me and reading him felt like opening my eyes for the first time
Please if you’re going to use ai to write your tweet at least remove phrases like “The same movie is loading now.”
That sentence could cause an aneurysm
The last super El Niño erased $5.7 trillion from the global economy. The World Bank's official damage estimate was $45 billion. The undercount was more than 100x, and the one forming right now is forecast to be stronger.
In 1998, coffee and cocoa harvests failed, rice crops drowned, and grocery prices jumped worldwide. Peru's fishing industry collapsed in a single season. California got a month of nearly nonstop rain, with mudslides taking out entire neighborhoods. Insurance premiums in flood zones never came back down.
The same movie is loading now. Forecasters are calling for atmospheric rivers slamming California, ice storms from Texas across the Southeast, a strangely warm Canadian winter, and supercharged Pacific typhoons. Cocoa, coffee, and rice futures already started moving in May. Your chocolate bar and your morning coffee are the first places you'll feel a Pacific Ocean running 3 degrees hot.
And the pain outlasts the weather. Dartmouth tracked economies for a decade after each event and found the damage compounds for up to 14 years, because money that would have gone to growth goes to rebuilding instead. That's how a "$45 billion disaster" quietly became $5.7 trillion.
The strange part is how visible this is. Earthquakes give zero warning. Hurricanes give days. This one gave the world months, with odds climbing from 22% in March to above 90% now.
The most predictable trillion-dollar event on Earth, and almost nobody has changed a single plan.
What if your memories were supposed to melt into your consciousness and you’re stunting that process every time you look at an old photo?

Did you know every time you recall a memory, you change it slightly ? Once you've thought about the time in Yosemite for the 20th time, most of what you remember is not true.
That's why recording something is still the GOAT.
