The Assemblywoman is correct… I do not believe this is constitutional.
New York loses in court.
NJ progressives: “Hold my beer.”
Apparently, reading is hard. Our Legislature is packed with attorneys, yet the Supremacy Clause and limits of state authority still elude them.
Even NJs nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services put a giant warning label on this hot mess: “SUBSTANTIAL LEGAL RISK,” with “significant uncertainty” over whether the State can even legally collect the money. And how much will taxpayers spend defending this beast in court? Who knows. OLS says the legal costs are "indeterminate". That's a fancy word that means "a boatload" in this context.
Nothing says “affordability” like hiring lawyers with your money to find out whether the Constitution still applies.
Hint: It does.

New low for normalized Jew-hate in the American Democratic Party. Very sad:
Painting your political opponents as puppets of Jews, as this El-Sayed ad does, and as crazed baby-killers and money-grubbing villains who are the root cause of every bad thing not just in the world, but in your life—from wars to the price of eggs to the reason you can’t have free healthcare—is not just low-grade Jew-hate. It’s pure Third Reich stuff, translated directly from the original German.
Do you remember when Jewish Democrats in Michigan explained that they would vote for El-Sayed despite his open disdain for Jews, since there are many other important issues they need him to fight for? That anything was worth it to “defeat MAGA”?
Well, here’s El-Sayed’s answer to them: Don’t worry, all those issues we agree on, like healthcare, inflation, and climate change, I’m going to make them about Jews too! I will tell the public that the Jews are the reason they can’t have those things.
I need to think about this… as it would remove needed flexibility but his point concerning process is, at its core, correct.
A guardrail that comes with its own notwithstanding is not a guardrail. It is a decoration. Stay NJ set a 12 percent surplus requirement before a single check goes out. Trenton has waived it in three consecutive budgets, at 10.9, 11.5 and 10 percent. Next week I introduce a constitutional amendment so the budget can no longer quietly override the laws we already passed.

If I had a nickel for everytime I’ve heard a GM mention a Bayesian hierarchical model, I’d have one nickel.
And I acquired that nickel today.
My 2 questions for #NJDevils GM Sunny Mehta at his press conference today and his well thought out answers.
Called him out for bluffing. Got him talking about Bayesian hierarchical models. And allegedly stole @mikemorrealeNHL’s question 😂

This is the standard way to score tax policy. You score the law as written (in this case a one-time wealth tax) and the behavioral consequences from that law (people worried it will last moving).
There are arguments against that approach. But is not “highly inappropriate” or “dishonest” to do what JCT or any other neutral body would do.
Replying to @gabriel_zucman
Let’s be clear: this is a highly inappropriate way to model the effect of Prop 40 on taxpayer behavior.
For one, it’s a basic violation of rational expectations, a cornerstone of modern economics.
In Jaros and @joshrauh world, the billionaires act irrationally: they respond to a policy that does not exist and will never exist.
Economics students around the world are taught this is not an appropriate way to model behavior — but apparently in this context (fighting Prop 40) it’s OK.
This nugget is buried at the end.

Gabriel Zucman @gabriel_zucman has now for the third time criticized our research on California’s proposed billionaire tax, claiming we have provided “no answer” to his criticisms.

We have actually already responded twice on this platform, but let’s address his arguments once more in detail, with the hope that third time’s the charm. 1/14
This Hoover Institution study, which has fueled the deluge of ads (more than $200 million spent by billionaires so far) to defeat the California billionaire tax, is spectacularly misleading.
Let me explain its crucial flaw. 🧵
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Zucman argues that the tax will raise his projected revenue because billionaires who leave CA after 1/1/26 will be taxed anyway.
At least $542B of net worth (Page, Brin, Thiel) departed the state by 12/31/25.
The entire thread is a misleading denial of this fact.

Zucman is considered the most credentialed and elite academic supporting the notion of wealth taxes - the fact that he is outmatched intellectually by the average anon RW poster on here is telling; the socialists vainly try to establish an academic veneer for their schemes but at the end of the day it’s just about resentment and hatred of the successful and well turned out. There’s no genuine policy case for wealth taxes and Zucmans latest beclownment should show how thin the veil is
Replying to @gabriel_zucman
The key problem is this:
Why would billionaires permanently leave California in response to a one-time tax owed if they lived there on January 1, 2026?
It would only make sense for them to leave if the tax becomes annual.
But if the tax becomes annual, it would also generate revenue annually — by virtue of, well, being annual.

When your policies are born out of hostility toward property owners, this is what happens.
Isabel Adon bought into a co-op in the Bronx to build something for her children. Junior Gonzalez did it after serving in the Marines. They say overnight, the city of New York took it all with little to no notice or compensation, labeling their building "distressed" and transferring the deed to a nonprofit. This happened to hundreds of families, nearly all in minority communities. A $60 million settlement has been proposed, but the fight isn't over. Every family deserves the right to build generational wealth without fear of losing it.
Despicable. Plain despicable.
BREAKING:
A billionaire wanted a Trump pardon.
His family gave Alina Habba a $50 million deal.
Julio Herrera Velutini's daughter hired Habba -- then a senior adviser to Pam Bondi at the Justice Department -- at $10 million a year for four years plus bonuses.
He got his pardon not long after.

1. This claim is downright false. The top 0.001% paid an avg effective tax rate in the high 30s in recent years
2. Zucman's published stats from 2018 confirmed this. Then he manipulated how he calculates them to fit his story. I caught him red handed.
