When rice is attacked by Rhizoctonia solani (the fungus behind sheath blight disease), stress builds up and damages proteins inside plant cells. That's where PIMT steps in an enzyme that repairs these damaged proteins and helps restore their disease-fighting powers. Researchers found that boosting PIMT activity in rice significantly improved its ability to resist sheath blight, offering a promising new lead for developing disease-resistant rice varieties critical for protecting yields and food security. 🔗 Published in Nature Communications, 2026.
