❓ How do dissatisfied citizens experience a participatory process❓
In this article in @PolStudies based on 35 interviews, I find that highly populist citizens pay special attention to whether authorities take citizens and their decisions seriously. 1/4🧵journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…

Happy to announce that I have been awarded an ERC Starting Grant for my project titled "Deception in Democracy: Political Lying Accusations and Their Effects on Democratic Citizenship"
A huge thank you to everyone who has helped making this happen!
Today is day 2 of the great workshop organized by @L_deJonge and @MatthiasDilling, asking how we can respond to voters’ grievances!
I present a paper with Tsveta Petrova and Natasha Wunsch, asking which types of voters are most likely to accept democratic transgressions.

Democracies face rising autocratic threats. The framework by @jmvanlit @CarolienvanHam @MauritsMeijers and case studies of Senegal 🇸🇳 and Poland 🇵🇱 highlight how institutional elites and citizens defend against these trends. #Democracy #Autocratization doi.org/10.1080/13510347.202…

Second, as part of my PhD dissertation, I have created "Autocratic Counterfactuals" to study which (if any) institutional set-ups can stop #autocratization and sustain democracy.

With Natasha Wunsch and Tsveta Petrova, we study citizens' willingness to accept democratic #backsliding in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿

On the train to #EPSA2024, where I am excited to (co)present three papers! 😄
1⃣ Citizen tolerance for democratic transgressions
2⃣ Autocratic counterfactuals and sustaining democracy

And that’s a wrap of the workshop organized by @CEDAR_Bham!
A unique opportunity to present our work (doi.org/10.1080/13510347.202…) on democratic resilience, not just with academics but with practitioners and policymakers!
Thanks for organizing @Fromagehomme and @Manoel_Gehrke!

Our final day of debating excellent papers on warning signs and false alarms of democratic backsliding @ECPR @jmvanlit @EHernandezPe @th_ges @seskaaning @Suthan_1607 ecpr.eu/Events/Event/Worksho…
So far the discussions have been great, with critical comments and in-depth questions! Very cool to have this group of scholars together in the workshop co-organized with @HMazepus and @EHernandezPe!
Want to know more? Let us know! ecpr.eu/Events/Event/Worksho…
However, we shouldn't be too alarmist, a topic we will discuss in more depth tomorrow with @th_ges, @sergsagara , @seskaaning and myself.
Optimistically, democracies are often #resilient, but the question remains if false alarms are a necessary evil or frustrating distraction...
... exploring when they occur, who responds, and how we can distinguish false from genuine.
Obvious actors like parliamentarians and judges are important, but we also see how journalists through Freedom of Information-requests, and ordinary citizens through op-eds play a role.
And today, we had some amazing case studies on Italy (Gianfranco Baldini), the US (Maria Lindén), the UK (@se_kip ), Germany (Florian Grotz and Sabine Klopp), and Slovakia (@KSipulova and @DavidKosarCZ ). All cases show that an alarm often rings. But we are still ...
To counter this, civil society organizations can help inform people about (ongoing) autocratization and delegitimization (@lee_aldar).
In addition, there are ways how citizens can be made to reject these autocratic efforts (@Suthan_1607).
