Something crazy has taken our office by storm this week. It's a phenomenon we have dubbed #AmazonLootBoxes. It all started with this tweet from @meslin, who was just trying to order some boxes. teapawt.net/meslin/status/12258349…
1. Three weeks ago, I ordered a box of boxes from @PkgWholesalers, via @amazonca. Specifically, I ordered a package of 25 boxes, each 6x9x6: amazon.ca/gp/product/B00CP34…

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

There's been a lot of buzz about β€” and criticism of β€” Instinct over the last few days. Building an agent that YOLOs it can produce impressive results. Building an agent that you can actually trust with real data & responsibilities is much harder. At @TaskletAI much of what we do is giving businesses enough control that they can trust agents for real, consequential work. Here's a few things we to make this real πŸ‘‡πŸ»πŸ§΅

Also *inevitably* we are going to discover the downside of maximally candid automatically recorded persistent record of what senior technologists believed about their orders and actions via an indictment at some point.

My microtactical suggestion if you are ever in a very frustrating meeting is to pivot and say "Of course there are some people who are reading in not-their-native-language" because that gives these meeting participants permission to notice difference in ability levels.

Always an adventure calling the IRS Me: "Hi, I'm calling about penalty relief for my client. He's disabled and --" Agent: "What's the account number?" Me: "He lost his job. Couldn't afford to file. He has severe anxiety and --" Agent: "I see. The penalty is $847. Next?" Me: "His anxiety is documented. He's been struggling for years. He literally couldn't handle opening the mail from you guys." Agent: "Understood. The penalty stands." Me: "He's on disability income. This is going to hurt him badly." Agent: "I hear you. Still $847." Me: "He was literally unable to function during this period. His doctor can verify --" Agent: "That's unfortunate. The penalty is assessed." Me: "So there's nothing we can do? No hardship exception? No compassion?" Agent: "Not without something to base it on, sir." Me: *long pause* Me: "I mean - unless I..." Agent: "You could...." Me: "Could what?" Agent: "Well. You'd have to say it." Me: "Say..." Agent: "THE words, sir." Me: "What words?" Agent: "I can't say them for you." Me: "It's not even a sure thing though. Could it work?." Agent: "Only one way to find out sir." Me: *long pause* Me: "I'm going to say it." Agent: "I'm bracing, sir." Me: "First time penalty abatement." Agent: "Excellent. Your client is eligible. I'm releasing the penalty now. We're all set." Me: "Wait. That's it? Just like that?" Agent: "Yes sir. The penalty is gone." Me: "It's automatic?" Agent: "Exactly." Me: "So why all the drama? Why couldn't you just tell me?" Agent: "Because most people don't understand how serious a decision it is to say THE words." Me: "It's that serious? Why?" Agent: "You just used your one shot." Me: "What do you mean my one shot?" Agent: "First time penalty abatement. You can only invoke it once per client. Ever." Me: "...once?" Agent: "That's right. Once... And then it resets again in three years." Me: "Wait, it resets? So we can do this again in a few years?" Agent: "Is there anything else I can help you with?"

.@OpenTable is there any way to get account support from a real person? your Contact Us page has no options other than the "chatbot" which does not work (literally just links me to the support page...and the reason i need support is that your support page is wrong)

learned today that when you use s3fs to mount a bucket to your file system, it reports a number for available free space. anyone else ever seen an E in the output of a df -h before? cause i sure haven't πŸ€ͺ

omit the -h [human readable] flag and you get the more obvious indication of the scale

FYI if you want to see what features @NotionHQ email will launch in about 18 months, you could just go use @Shortwave today Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
Here is Notion’s email client tcrn.ch/3YCyvBk

can't wait to see all the ways this will produce endless frustration in the most 🍎 way possible. my biggest gripe with 🍎 devices for YEARS has been how their design language of "only show what's important" forces hiding failures in a way that greatly inhibits troubleshooting.
So Apple has introduced a new system called β€œPrivate Cloud Compute” that allows your phone to offload complex (typically AI) tasks to specialized secure devices in the cloud. I’m still trying to work out what I think about this. So here’s a thread. 1/

so that's my fear w/ this setup: it's going to get implemented invisibly in apps, the app will only work if this remote compute does it's part, but your network connection is going to be interrupted in a way that only prevents you from getting to the compute and not the base app.

so you're going to have an app be constantly hanging at some random spot, and apple + the app will not provide any error messaging, monitoring, or explanation. (now imagine having to troubleshoot that with your parents'/grandparents' devices😑)
