Accurate data matters, particularly when it is being used to shape housing policy. We cannot accept an analysis that combines different categories of short-term letting, including home sharing, and presents them as secondary lets. Our latest analysis of the council’s register identifies 1,443 licensed secondary-let properties, representing approximately 0.5% of Edinburgh’s housing stock. We also question what happened to the repeatedly cited estimates of 12,000 to 14,000 short-term lets by The @Edinburgh_CC. If those figures were accurate and comparable, we should now be seeing evidence of more than 10,500 properties returning to residential use. Where is that evidence? We cannot treat a reduction in reported numbers as proof that permanent homes have been delivered. Read more / Listen to the radio / watch the TV segment: assc.co.uk/news/assc-respond… @ASSCnews

John Swinney won't be able to pop into his local for a pint any more. Brown & Blacks in Scone is run by an entrepreneur called Katie Long. Her story sums up everything that's wrong with business rates. Katie put around £140,000 of her own money into the business. She's done everything she can to make it work. Her energy costs have risen from £25,000 a year to over £100,000. But the real stinger is that her business rates have gone up from under £20,000 to over £52,000. How is anyone supposed to make a living with that? Now think about the knock-on effect: potential job losses at a time of high unemployment, which means less tax coming in and a greater burden on the state. The First Minister has appointed Jonathan Murphy to look at rates. So here's my offer to Jonathan: let's spend a day together visiting the businesses whose livelihoods are threatened by the current system.

This isn’t harm reduction. It’s institutionalised delusion and it would be hilarious if it weren’t so utterly lethal Let me be blunt: no country on Earth has ever successfully legalised or decriminalised Class A drugs without unleashing a Pandora’s box of misery addiction, death, and chaos spilling out in every direction. Yet somehow, we’re meant to believe that Scotland with collapsing services and the highest drug death rate in Europe will be the one to crack it. I've written extensively about how this has been tried elsewhere if you dare to look beyond the facebook memes and legalisers propaganda - start here 1. annemarieward.substack.com/p… 2. annemarieward.substack.com/p… 3. annemarieward.substack.com/p… 4. annemarieward.substack.com/p…

@kmckenna63 in today's @heraldscotland tears into John Swinney’s plan to decriminalise all drugs — and rightly so. More than 1,100 people died from drugs last year. The SNP has had nearly 20 years to get treatment and recovery working, yet Swinney would rather blame Westminster and listen to campaigners than face families and communities living with the consequences. He wants more powers. I want him to answer for what he has done with the powers he already has. heraldscotland.com/news/2658…

Saddened to see the “anyone but England” attitude of some of my fellow Scots today. And as someone with a genuine affinity with Croatia, having briefly considered holidaying there in 1987, I find it a little patronising to myself and my Croatian amigos on our big day. 🇭🇷

Today, The Scottish Hospitality Group welcomes the decision by @dgcouncil to scrap plans for a Visitor Levy. We are pleased that councillors took on board the evidence presented by ourselves, and also the @ASSCnews . Hospitality and tourism support over 7,000 jobs across the region and play a vital role in our local economy. The focus now should be on working together to attract more visitors, increase overnight stays, and support the businesses that make Dumfries & Galloway such a fantastic destination. By working in partnership, we can grow hospitality and tourism, create jobs, strengthen communities, and ensure the region remains competitive for years to come #touristtax #tvl #touristlevy #hospitality #tourism
