True, but an over emphasis on plane danger (in name of safety) could have stalled air travel industry before it took off. Nuclear power is a good example of a technology with real safety issues that suffered from an abundance of caution, which in long run made world less safe!
You don't need to be deeply pessimistic about AI to think it's good to work on AI safety, just like you don't need to be deeply pessimistic about planes to think it's good to work on aviation safety. Risk reduction is valuable across a wide range of risk estimates.

Tough loss for Team USA vs the Dutch. But now we have to replace our highways with bike lanes. Sorry, those are just the rules of the World Cup.

Players need to face down FIFA over this. If a captain is booked for wearing a OneLove armband, both teams should leave the pitch until the card is recinded. Delays would cause chaos in global tv schedules and draw greater attention to LGBTQ+ rights and FIFA's malfeasance.
Soccer teams representing seven European nations at the World Cup have announced their captains will no longer wear the OneLove armband in Qatar after FIFA, which organizes the tournament, said players sporting the bands would be sanctioned. wapo.st/3TUKDaU

For what it's worth, the recent rise was mainly due to some refinery issues. It's ludicrous and terrifying to think that these could determine the fate of U.S. democracy
BREAKING: For the first time in four weeks, the national average price of gasoline is down from a week ago, declining 5.4 cents from last Monday to $3.86/gal today.

This blog discusses what our summer interns did at OtterTune. We're lucky to get amazing interns 2yrs in a row. But the best part is artwork from @liam_f_walsh. I asked "Draw DJ OT teaching a younger otter how to break into a car". Liam is a genius. I don't need #stablediffusion
We had the best summer interns. As the season comes to a close we wanted to show you what they got up to in 12 weeks. ottertune.com/blog/ottertune…

Early childhood is a crucial period when brains are developing. That's why research since the 1960s has mostly shown significant benefits to programs for 0-5s, especially at-risk kids. The question isn't whether American can afford to offer pre-K but whether we can afford not to.

More of these anti-noise radars please. I've never understood why we allow motorbikes to make incredible amounts of noise in areas where thousands of people live.
"A jacked-up motorcycle in the middle of the night can easily wake up 10,000 people." More cities in #France install "Méduse" anti-noise radars, which have 4 microphones, camera to automatically ticket vehicles that exceed a certain number of decibels ouest-france.fr/pays-de-la-l…

I thought I'd try to reconstruct Bryan's discussion with a 13-year-old about the minimum wage based on the below tweet: (@bryan_caplan let me know if anything is inaccurate)
Took me under 5 minutes to turn a normal, smart 13-year-old against the minimum wage. Contrary to almost everyone, the textbook argument IS intuitive. It's just emotionally unappealing.

Nearly everything I've learned about things that may cause race conditions has come from tracking down flaky tests in CI. Those rare "random" failures are usually bugs (although more often in the test code than the production code)

It's mystifying why Democrats are not writing a series of abortion-rights bills and scheduling votes on them, starting with a bill that allows abortion for health-of-mother/rape/incest, then first trimester, then 15 weeks, then the WHPA.
Are any democrats working on a life-of-the-mother exception bill? If not, why not? Why are we not forcing Republicans to tell us whether or not they will make exceptions for miscarriages or when the mother's life is in danger?
